Have you tried jump starting the car? It may need a little more cold current boost.

it has gas? (sorry)

sounds like fuel-starvation, you might check the fuel filter, or possibly the fuel-pump
is it carburated, or fuel-injection?

I would really try a jump start. Leave the cables from a good battery hooked up to yours for about 10 minutes. Leave them connected and try to start it. You wouldn't believe how often this is the case. Also, make sure to take off your amp power and amp ground as not to cause any damage to them.

Tip: always connect the + (red) battery cable first. its a saftey thing in case the battery is leaking hydrogen and the +lead decides to spark

driving an 88 oldsmobile royal brougham, turned over great like usual, no tach, ill explain this as best i can

i inserted key, turned as usual, car turned over, engine ran for maybe .5-2.5 seconds, car died, like just kinda DIED, sounded like it putted down like maybe its not getting any fuel or something, ill prolly end up taking it to the mechanics this weekend.

Ok, when you try to start the car now is there any clicking noises or is it just dead?

turn the key to the position just before the starter fires...do you hear the fuel-pump run for a second?

do this 5 or 6 times and then try to start.

this is almost surely a fuel-starvation problem

^^What they asked.... If it fires as normal but just doesn't start then it's not electrical or ignition.

Have you had this problem before?

Also, try givin' her lots O gas while trying to start (if ignition is workin ok)...if this works, could be a symbol of weak fuel pressure

yo yoshida
this sounds like ur having gas problems. even though there is gas it is either a fuel line problem or idle control. how is the air flow regulator doing. are all of ur pcv valve lines tight, as well as egr. fuel injection is so tricky when it comes down to diagnosing it. if i were there though i could figure it out.

K im here now. How long have you had the car. also when the tune up was done what did the mechanic do to the vehicle list exactly what was done. as everyone says it sounds like a fuel problem. or Spark issue. If the car starts no problem but dies down shortly after then try this ....

turn key to ON position. NOT STARTING IT but just ON. or RUN for that matter. where all the accessories and other gadgets turn on. now turn it off

listen for a noise a little humm or so coming from the rear of the car. Thats your fuel pump chances are since the car is so old that its weak or just about ready to die. Fuel injection runs on about 25-40psi to run nominally. a weak pump at best can pump out 7psi great for a carb but horrible for a fuel injected car. So when you start it the pump primes and builds pressure for when you first crank the motor over. then dies down as it loses pressure.

also this could be caused by a block inthe fuel lines, like your fuel filter. Which is why i ask exactly what the mechanic did to your car

or IM me tommorow and ill help you out.

Daniel

i was thinking fuel pump as well.......and have we established if the car is still turning over after it dies?

i had a similar problme with my chevy, but it was carborated and it turned out to be te fuel filter.......now.......
what about a misfire, is there a distributer on this car.....it doesnt really SOUND electrical, but it could be a compound problem here......
the fuel pump isnt necessarily in the rear either.....lets hope it not cuz that means its prolly in tank.....and that would suck to replace.......=]

is it idleing properly for that couple of seconds?

stang is right one the money

first check the fuel filter (start with the cheapest thing first) then proceed on to the fuel pump. And that is where it gets fun since the pump in in the tank.

Not to mention you could also have clogged injectors. Now granted I do not think they would cause an immediate shut down. When I had a problem with injectors, I would get an unsteady idle and possibly it would bog too low and stall. But never tot he point of just having it shut down after start up. Not mention you would have noticed the progression of an injector problem getting that bad. But you never know until you do something. Fuel injector cleaner is cheap and not hard at all to use. You read the instructions on the bottle and yer fine. And of course also check the filter and pump.

yes i know all about the injectors only too well which is why i pointed to the source either plugs or whatnot or the fuel getting to the system. which I cant point out directly since i dont know what the mechanic did or anything of the sort
