I'm gathering parts for a machine for the wife. Email, surfing, web games, nothing special.

I'm going to resurrect an old Intel HSF to cool a 1.8A P4, and in the process of cleaning it ran into something I hadn't noticed before. The pad seems to be some kind of waxy material with a rectanglular piece of heavy "aliminum foil" sandwiched between.

Anyone know why Intel would use such a system?

I stripped all this off and plan on using some AS5 when I put it on the CPU.

Comments, concerns?

i dont know why they used this....but i think it had something to do with longevity of their product.......those thermal pads tend to break down after a while......perhaps it was just to prolong HSF life

I think they use the pad because it is a stable interface for a long period, in the box, and reliable in the hands of a first time builder.
Piece of fecal matter to anybody who's done it a few times, though.
