| I usually use coolerguys. I just get the cheapest ones I can find. They seem to fail at about the same rate as the big name ones do. This has been my experience anyway. |

You want to find the fans with the highest CFM and the lowest dB, this means they move lots of air and make little noise...otherwise it doesnt make much difference on what make they are, as long as they do their job! _________________ »4 RS«»1Ж «»1 DENE«»1 FREAKIN LAME OH«»1 MONEY MONEY«

| get the tornado's and switch the 12 and 5v rails around. Still moves more CFM's than any other fan, but without being as loud as it is at 12v (still a bit loud but not nearly as bad) |

^^^^good advice
You can also use resistors inline with your fans to help slow them down. The best ones I have found at 1/2 watt 33-47 ohm. And it depends on the fan as well as to how much you have to slow it down. If you are unsure how to do this I might be able to be persuaded to make some for you. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

NO NO...DO NOT put cheap 455 12vdc fans on your precious 5V rail...BAD BAD.
Inductive load = coils of wire = acts like antenna to noise = do not add noise to your 5v rail = asking for problems
Use weaz's resistors on the 12 v rail. _________________ .

The best bet, IMOHO, is for Pat to get some normal 80mm fans that push a fair amount of air and are relatively quiet. Quick and easy and cheap compared to the alternative.

My 2c |
quoted because this was worth more than $.02
very good point Jay.
My $.02 + Jay's $.02 = $.05 (dont ask its the new math) _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

The Vantec stealths are nice...very quiet but yet very efficient. _________________ ABIT IC7 MAX 3, Corsair PC4000 Pro, P4 2.6C @3.23 GHz 1:1, 2.5-4-4-7, 2 WD Raptors in RAID 0 |

Here's an easy circuit to slow a fan down most effeciently. It pulses the fan @12V and varies the time of the pulse, rather than lowering the voltage. (like a resistor) It will run one 12v fan up to 120mm size. Tried and tested circuit. For the tweaker who just has to build something completely variable.
I haven't used this since Stealths came out.

That is too cool. I just have one question . . . what kind of strain would a varying draw? Could this also effect stability? I may be thinking about this differently.

I used to use stealth fans. Then I discovered SilenX fans. Better cfm and lower dB. The down side to this is they cost a little more. But from the sound level value of these it is well worth it.
