ok. So I'm the super newb with a pretty decent computer...or so I thought. I just spent like 1400 dollars upgradeing my pc, heres what I have. MSI K8N Neo Platinum Edition mobo, Athlon 64 3500+, 1gig Kingmax 333mhz pc2700 ram, 60 gb Western Digital HDD, 580 watt Demon Black Chrome PS, nvida geforce 6800ultra OC...and my system is running the same as it was when I had my xp 2600 in it, I hoped that after getting all thisthat my comp would rock ass, but it doesnt, I'm still getting lag in farcry for christs sake! any tips on what may be wrong, or why my comp is sucking would be greatly appreciated

Your RAM would be better if it was DDR400 or higher, but i dont think this is the problem some how.

Have you installed all drivers, chipset and video card especially.

Is the HDD a new or old one? Did you full format or not? Always full format when installing new hardware such as Mobo/CPU and doing a fresh OS install.

There are more things im sure people will suggest, but right now i am brain dead.

I'm pretty sure I installed all drivers for the mobo, the only thing I didnt install was a floppy that has nforce3 sata raid drivers on it, but I dont even know what sata raid is, and I didnt install it on the premise that I didnt have sata or raid for my previous system, and all I really changed was mobo and cpu...dont know if thats correct logic or not though. I'll check forr all the drivers on the 6800 ultra too. I have a feeling it could be the ram too for some reason, I dont know much about the speed of ram or what it means, but everyone else has higher than 2700.
The hdd is an old one, but no more than about a month or so, but it was the one I was using previously if thats the answer to your question. I didnt full format I dont think, cuz when I booted up the machine for the first time it recognized my winxp on there already and I chose to repair it.

that is almost certainley your problem.

Full format straight away, back up your stuff and fresh install the OS then install all the chipset and GPU drivers and what ever else you have (sound cards etc) and your problem should hopefully be fixed.

Post when done

Burn all the files you need onto some cds.
Next, download all the latest motherboard drivers and video drivers . . . burn those to disk also.

You should really get a new hard drive (preferably SATA). That is really hurting your pc right now.
Then do a FULL reformat using the windows install disk. Don't do a quick one. You'll still have those problems.
Install the latest drivers again and you'll be golden.
You don't need the SATA raid.

The only stupid question is the one not asked (w00t nathans almighty saying)

Just backup all your stuff onto CD by using a prog like nero, then when you got all your OS and Drviers installed, just insert the CD and copy the files to the correct locations.

You're in good hands here! The only other suggestion I have is that when you get your system working like you want it, and before you accumulate a lot of junk on your hardie, use Norton Ghost to create an image of the drive and either burn it to CDs or put it in a seperate partition.
Sure makes reformatting a breeze.

ok, thanks tweaker.
Josh, I downloaded everything I could find, got all the latest drivers, and stuff, took care of all that. Farcry still runs like s***, when I set the video to very high. when I click on auto detect it puts all my settings to low...thats still discouraging, but all my other games run uber fast...far cry is the only one giving me a hard time. Thanks again for all of your help, reinstalling windows definitley sped things up, if any of you guys can think of anything else I should be doing with this comp let me know. I have basically no experience with overclocking or raid or sata or any of that stuff. it's all set up old school style...it's the only style I know

Ok, sounds like you may have the system set up correctly. so we can ignore that for now.

What is the AGP speed set to? (by that I mean x2 x4 etc.) check by using the Nvidia display options (on display settings, click the button marked "advanced" then click the tab marked "GeForce 6800 Ultra" where it says adapter information there will be "bus" oposite should say "AGP 8x")

your card has support for AGP 8X including Fast Writes and sideband addressing

If the adapter information says anything other than 8x you will need to change that in your BIOS. (refer to documentation for Mobo)
also make sure that Fast Write is ennabled in BIOS (AGP BIOS options)

If all that is fine, then try this : http://www.twistedmods.com/article.php?artid=59&page=1

Just follow this and you should see an increase in performance.

BTW just how high are the high settings you are trying to use?
What version of Direct X are you using?

I tried to use the very high setting, which is full particles and all that stuff with 1024x768 in 32 res. the only way I can play it and even try to enjoy it is on low settings. I'm running dx 9.0, and fast write is enabled in bios. agp bus is 8x. Gunna try the tweaked settings now

got it all set up, I had the agp on auto in the bios, and I switched it to 4x8x, and now it runs the way I expected it too...it's fucking amazing now. Thank you guys so much! :) Now one more question, I have it running good, but I'm a little worried about the temp of my cpu and chassis, my cpu is running at around 55 degrees celcius...is that too high?

Whats your case cooling and CPU cooler?

is 55c load or idle? If its load i dont think thats too bad, but im not sure on best temps for AMD 64's.

Good to hear you are running faster now. Good job, §.

Yes, what kind of case cooling do you have? 55C seems too high for idle or load on an AMD 64.

actually 55c underload is about right. Just depending on case cooling.

I just have one fan that in the window of the right side of my case, and I would guess that the temp I see is idle because I dont know how to check the temp when the comp is loading, the way I do it is I play a game or whatever, and after I've been using the comp for like 5 hours I restart it and check the cpu temp in bios, and it's usually right around 55c, I've neer seen it higher than that. How would I check it while it's loading, and is the one fan in the window enough?

and how would I make sure that everything is getting enough power? one of my worries is that with all the lights and bullshit I have connected to my case that 580 watts might not be enough to be adding more stuff

not loading temps.... load temps like when you are doing something cpu intensive

the best way to get temps is a monitoring program. Usually the motherboard will come with them. You may just have to look and the support cd that came with yours.

with the 580 you should be covered

ok, all that came with my mobo was a driver cd tho. About how big is the fluctuation in temperature between idling, and load tho? Is 55c low enough so that I'm in the ok zone either way? I should prolly just go and get a couple more fans tho, there only like 9 bucks right?

Yeah, you only have intake fans, its better to with exhaust if you only have 1 fan.

Use CPU Burn in, this will stress the CPU and get it up to max temp so that you can monitor it in windows at near enough a full load. Just google it.

I ordered 3 new speez fans from newegg, and get this it only cost me $9 and some change, shipping included! So I'll be hooking those up soon as they get here and hopefully they'll drop me temps down a bit.
I also downloaded a whole bunch of different programs aimed at benchmarking and tweaking. One of the programs I ran that got me a little worried was sisoft sandra. I ran the system diagnostic and there was one thing that caught my attention. I got a warning that my vcore more than rated maximum, and the cpu voltage was at 2.69, then I rebooted, and ran the test again and the vcore was lower than rated minimum, cpu voltage was at 1.46...how dangerous is this and how can I fix it?
