I am running an Athlon XP 1800 on a Asus A7V333 with a CoolerMaster HHC-001 HSF. I get idle temps of around 45C. Since I'm not into overclocking or the such, the temps I get are ok by me. But my only problem is that this HSF is so loud. I originally wanted to use a ThermalTake 7+, but for somereason the heatsink did not work with my setup. I thought I just bought a bad thermaltake but after 3 unsuccessful exchanges I switched over to the coolermaster and was successful, except I was stuck with the loud fan. I was thinking of using a 60-80mm adapter with the same HS and buying a 80mm Sunon fan in hopes of maybe solving both the loud fan and maybe cooling my cpu a little more. After reading through the forums, it sounds like using an adapter isn't such a great idea. But I've been looking over online stores and couldn't find any 60mm fan's with an equal output but less noisy than the fan on the HHC-001. I believe TomsHardwareGuide rated the HHC-001 at 62 dBA and CoolerMaster's site rates the HSF at pushing 36CFM and claims it is a great HSF despite the noise. Tweaknews says the HHC-001 pumps out 45 dBA and claims the "heatpipes" do nothing if installed vertically. Any suggestions on what alternatives I have?

Welcome to TweakNews HimeNoHogosha,

I agree - go with the adapter and the Sunon 80mm fan. Naturally, Sunon fans are quieter than most of the competition. Good luck. :)

I have the HCC-001as well as the Dr. Thermal TI-V77 and have swapped back and forth a few times between the two for cooling my 1.4Tbird @ 1.6GHz.

The Dr. Thermal runs about 4 to 6 degrees celcius hotter but is quieter (compared to the stock HCC-001). This is still a very reasonable temp IMHO.

As for the HCC-001....I too wanted to experiment with quieter fans....so I picked up a combo from crazypc.com that allowed me to mount the 80mm fan and it also had LEDs ...
as for temps with it......I run around 37C to 39C when not gaming....

Man that HCC-001 is a HEAVY sucker eh?
also ....... polish the heck out of the bottom....it can get VERY purty....I could post a pic if how mine tuned out.

How would I go about polishing up the bottom surface? Does this increase the performance significantly?

I'm taking it that he meant polish as in get a smooth cloth and rub that copper till it shines so much you can see a reflection of your face

As for performance, the above doesn't really do anything for performance...

Now, the process of lapping a heatsink can yield performance results depending on the heatsink and the metal. Lapping is the process of using sandpaper to smooth out the bottom of the heatsink starting 1st with coarse sandpaper then working your way down to super fine sandpaper...this allows for better heat transfer between the cpu and the heatsink therefore cooler temps. In your case, I wouldn't bother doing that as it also voids warranties

Nice shots and some good lapping there. Are they digital shot or a webcam?

DMW - thanks for the pics, looks like you spent some good time making that shine (rhyme not intended), even the aluminum on the other heatsink yields a nice reflection.

My question is - did you polish the heatsinks, lap them, or a combination of the two?

I see that you got an adapter and stuck an 80mm fan onto the heatsink. How did the performance of this setup compare to the stock fan that was on the HHC-001?

combination....

the performance was about the same (maybe 1 0r 2 degrees hotter....but that 80mm makes 1/3 the noise and flowed about 5 to 10CFM less.
