i guess ill save for the 64 then. and you really think ill only need 1 GB? cause that's a shitload cheaper. i won't even need to overclock the 64 then. and i won't need such an off the wall case either. ill get a motherboard without integrated video. So i wont need a sound card at all? or whats the deal with that? how many watt power supply then? 420?

*blushes* You the man with that insane pali overclock. Yeah, McGuyver is my hero and I always model my mods/makeshift makes after him.

No, you should not need a sound card in any case. Most every motherboard produced today comes with decent onboard sound.

420watt or more psu from thermaltake, antec, or enermax are highly suggested. Thermaltake is pretty good for price/stability.

kv8pro v1.1 from abit
has the Via KT800pro chipset which is one of the faster ones on the market, and also one with the highest overclocking potential
that's the one i got now and am very happy with it... a ton of room for fans, locked agp and pci.

Something based on the nf3 250 chipset is also good, offhand i believe MSI has a k8v neo platinum or something like that
also has locked agp and pci

avoid gigabyte!!!!!
as good as they usually are for stability, 80% of those i've seen sold where i work have come back defective within 3 months or less.

nope i dont think u will need a sound card at all. unless u do midi like stuff where u input ur music into the pooter and even then i dont think a sound card is necessary. nvidia solved that one. but hey that case isnt that bad but then again after the xaser3 v1000d every thing got all bad. psu 420 sounds moderate enough maybe more for future expandability.

lian-li's are indeed sweet cases, but i'ld say wait to see the bottom line and go for it if you can afford it. better a not so good case but a kickin videocard.
the v1100 is indeed really sweet, and the craftsmanship on it is without equal... but i would also recommend the tsunami dream from thermaltake as a cheaper, not so well build, but none the less good case.

These would be definate gets:
6800GT ~$400US
2*512mb pc3200 ~ $150-190 (depending on make. Check out pricegrabber and the new memory Nate just reviewed)
SATA HDD 80-120GB ~$80-120
Thermaltake PSU (420watts or greater) $40+
Add any cdrws/dvds
B/N $700-800

Things to consider:
Abit nf7-s and mobile barton 2500+ ~$180
64 bit mobo and processor (need some price checks on these. You have any ideas Meobius?

Monitor, printer, new keyboard and mouse, fans, lights, case, cpu cooler, anything else?

when i say 1500 i mean for everything ill need for a computer because i want my little brother to have this one. but i dont need a fancy keyboard with 3 modes of fire, tow missles thermal couples, and hyper drive... in red no less. i just want a super fast/affordable system and i know i dont really know much of anything about it but i want to build it myself. i need the experience so i'll know how to upgrade it when the time comes because i dont plan on getting a new one for a long time. plus i think its cool.

Hehehe, Its still a good pc with lots of capabilities. You'll probably have to upgrade in 2 or 3 years no matter what. Thats just the name of the game.

Check out the pricegrabber link or www.newegg.com (great retailer and great prices)
Check out the reviews and search for the products that interest you.

You dont really need a raptor IMO, a good SATA will serve you well. Yes you only need 1 Gig of RAM, 2 is pointless unless you are into serious video editing and what not.

I would get a 480W rating PSU as you want to keep it for a few years, and it may just make upgrading in the future a little less awkward, and it wont cost you much more. The X-Dreamer case may be a good idea, they are very well priced, and from peoples opinions, they seem a great case.

Listen to meobius on the 64bit issue, he know his 64bit

what if i took a really huge crappy case and chopped it up and filled it full of fans and crap like that. i could spraypaint it so it would look nicer. I could cut away the side and throw in some plexy glass or whatever. that sounds like fun. do people do that or is that just retarded? haha i could chop out the side and put in an industrial fan.

You really don't need lots and lots of fans. You just need good airflow.

Best case I ever had:
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=11-127-020&DEPA=0

Of course it was only $35 when I bought it. This case has great airflow with 2 80mm fans. I put a blowhole in the top with a 92mm fan and dropped temps even more. The only bad thing I can say about this case is the lack of room. I really don't need a whole lot of room, i just need a nice looking case with good cooling.

OK, I thought I posted this last night, but this morning I can't find it anywhere. ..Kind of like forgetting where you parked your car the night before, yikes...

Anyway, I was asking about a sound card.. I need a really good one that supports wave files. I was going to download "Wingroove" a free software thing that lets you convert MP3 to Wave, but then found this in the troubleshoot section on my Dell (8200) after it made no sound. Any suggestions, guys? My guitar player has an extra one he says I can have, but I know nothing about it till I see it this week sometime. I don't want to install it unless it's the right one. He said someone gave it to him, and it cost about $150.
Anyway, here's the troubleshoot info:

Roland Driver Does Not Play Wave Files.

This article was previously published under Q78056

WINDOWS
kbmm kbsound

The Roland driver that ships with Windows with Multimedia Extensions is a MIDI driver, not a sound driver. Because this driver is a MIDI driver, it does not offer sound support, such as the playing of wave (.WAV) files.

The driver also does not show up under the initial setup of Windows under Sound Board options. This driver can only be manipulated by using Control Panel's Driver icon.
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows with Multimedia Extensions 1.0

RS......i split your thread to a new one in General Hardware. I couldnt for the life me discover why you would ask about a sound card in a VIDEO card thread.....=P

Please try to post your questions in your OWN thread to avoid stealing any attention from others.

Thanks
