| I ordered a Shuttle SS40G minipc barebones system and threw a thunderbird 1ghz, 512mb pc2700 ram, 40gb ibm hard drive and a samsung cd burner in it, booted and started installing Redhat 8. After 5-10 minutes, it shut down and wouldn't turn on again for about 10 minutes. Every time after this it'd shut down again. Every component was cool to the touch but the powersource was HOT. I'm fairly certain that it was the powersource overheating, but no one else seems to have had this problem. What do you guys think? |

Shuttle's stock Achme and Enhance PSUs provide only 200 W. Find out the power consumption of your installed devices and see if they consume more than 200 W. They probably do. Alternately, if you have the resources, test your system by plugging in a higher power PSU (e.g. 300 W +) temporarily. This will help determine if you have an inadequate PSU or another problem.
For example, power problems crashed my Shuttle SN41G2. I was trying to run a Barton 3000+, 1G Corsair TWINX, a 120G drive, DVDROM, wireless NIC PCI card, and a GeForce FX 5800 Ultra (the main troublemaker) all from a Shuttle 200 W Achme power supply. The machine would bluescreen every time I launched a 3D game or benchmark. The PSU became too hot to touch within 15 minutes even running only 2D modes.
Measuring with outboard 200/250/300/350 watt ATX PSUs, this setup was stable only with at least 300 W. So a 1RU server 300 W PSU replaced the Achme PSU in my SFF shortly there after. You may need to do the same. _________________ There's no such thing as a meme. Pass it on. |
