I just got my computer assembled and I'm now trying to install Windows XP Pro, but the computer won't boot off of the Windows XP disk. I've tried changing the BIOS settings to make it boot from the CD drive, but it's not working. Could it have something to do with the fact that the windows cd is a burnt copy? Is there some BIOS setting that might be wrong, or perhaps a boot floppy I could make?

Put in a single hard drive and attempt with one if u have 2. Does the BIOS recognize the CD-ROM drive? What error messages do you get? Do you have SATA hard drives?

Assuming this "back-up" of your OS disk was a good copy. It would function just the same....Try using another bootable CD and see if it will boot. If not you just got a bad CD drive. Some in-expensive models do not boot on some disks.

I'm just assuming that this "copy" is actualy a "back-up" of a windows disk that you did pay for. if not, well, err.... you may want to change your name and hide somewhere in mexico or something.

Of course it's a backup of a version of Windows I own, do you think I'm some kind of PIRATE or something?

Anyway, I only have 1 HDD and it's IDE not SATA

My CD drive was kinda cheap, but it is supposedly from a company that is a subsidiary(sp?) of AOPEN or one of the better brand of CD drive companies.

I have a Windows 98 disc, is there any way I could boot off that and then switch to the XP cd to install?

Hm, try to boot off that disk so we can eliminate the disk being the problem, or pinpointing it as the problem, dont attempt to switch them, post back with the results.

I was able to boot off of a Windows 98 disc, and it gave me choices of starting windows 98 setup, start with cd support, and start without cd support.

in that case the xp disk is messed up. Attempt to clean it, and if all else fails use the origional and then make another backup.

I've never used this backup to install before, and my original is out of comission, someone suggested I talk to Microsoft and see if they'll send me a replacement, but I'm hoping for a quicker fix, but if that's my only option I guess I'll have to do it.

an origional install doesnt need a boot disk, it should boot off of the cd. The 98 works off of the cd and the XP doesnt, its hosed.

well, this problem happend to me before when i just tried to make a normal copy of windows xp.If you know anyone who has a windows xp disk, use that, burn it(this is of course, backing up your original, kind of) using like, clone cd or something with protection encryption. If the cd was burnt with bad software, and windows is protected(i think) then most likley not all the files from the original windows disk were burnt correctly.IN OTHERWORDS TO SUM THIS UP.FIND A WIN XP DISK,BURN IT WITH CLONE CD,AND TRY THAT.GL

Microsoft doesnt protect their software with protections, u can use ne program to burn it. Nero is a good program but yes, the disk is most likely bad.

exactly!! it was a copy but it wasnt made to be a bootable disk.

since he was able to boot off of another disk everything should be set right. Its just that he is trying to boot from a non-bootable disk.

Make a boot disk w/fdisk and format on it, and go from there, or borrow a copy of XP from someone, boot from it, then put your disk in, so it will track correct keys.

Go to Microsoft and get the windows XP bootable floppy disk maker.

It makes 7-8 disks so you can boot up and pop your CD in.

^^^There ya go. Either that or www.bootdisk.com should be able to help you get it to work.

Is it possible that you aren't pressing a key when asked to boot from the cdrom?
