i should have re-phrased,

no what i do is not illegal file sharing.

i am part of a mobile dj company that is ALLOWED to share files over our own program which works on our network of computers.

please help me with this problem, i am not one of those pc-based stereotype users that pirate software/songs/etc.

Do you have a router? Try to uninstall and then on reinstall set up the connection to the peer networks manually. I had the same problem a while back.

Strange, I thought Limewire was legal, and signed up for the basic version just last week. Since loading a couple songs and loading & then deleting a couple of DVD movies that were incomplete files, now my XP runs real
S-L-O-W too.. I paid $50. for the Limewire program and they assure people they are legal.....?... ...I hope so!

Maybe I should try to get the money back & uninstall the program?

2Y, I have a Dell too, but any donations toward a better computer are welcome!.. .. Please tell 2dad I have PayPal, lol..

Erm..........no, LimeWire is not legal. What you paid for was a CD (or download) that "speeds up" the program. You didn't pay a penny to the record labels or movie producers.

It's a file-sharing program, and illegal. Get rid of it, and good luck getting your money back..........they never claimed it was "legal" (I just went through the website), so you really don't have anything to ask for.

The only legal way to download music or movies is through programs like iTunes, Rhapsody, or Napster, where you pay a fee per download, which then goes to the proper owner of the material. Same with DVD's, there's a couple of services that allow you to "rent' movies for a small fee.

If anybody tells you file-sharing is legal, they're either dumb or flat-out lying to get your money.

Cut and paste from an article from Yahoo AFP news, date June 30th, 2005:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Recording Industry Association of America filed a new series of complaints against US-based users of peer-to-peer software distributors Kazaa, Grokster and LimeWire.

The move came two days after the US Supreme Court ruled networks such as Grokster may be held liable for infringement if they encourage people to make unauthorized copies of copyrighted songs, films or other content.

Some 784 users were targeted in the RIAA's complaints, for violation of copyright.

The ruling in the closely watched "MGM v. Grokster" case gives a powerful tool to Hollywood and the music industry to crack down on distributors of technology designed to skirt copyright protection and make illegal copies.

Mitch Bainwol, chairman and chief executive of the RIAA, which represents the US recording industry, said the ruling "provided a real shot in the arm to legitimate online music services and unanimously injected moral clarity into this debate."

"If there was any doubt left, there should now be none -- individuals who download music without permission are breaking the law," Bainwol said.

The RIAA has filed thousands of suits against music pirates since the September 2003 launch of its legal offensive.

Critics of Monday's unanimous ruling by the Supreme Court, which sought to craft rules for fighting digital piracy in the biggest copyright case in two decades, had said it left murky guidelines that would lead to more litigation.

The case was seen as the most important in the copyright area since the 1984 "Betamax" decision named for the Sony videocasette recorder, a case that provided immunity from liability for providers of technology that can be used for both legal and unauthorized copies.

Y'know, Frnchy had me thinking I was all smart and everything for installing the DVD drive, so I go out and do one thing without asking TN, and LOOK what happens.

Sheeeeeesh, never again. Thanks for the tip, Hammy, I'll use thqat adaware program you recommended a while back. Boy, I learned my lesson.

Make sure you update the AdAware. You should run it once a week, anyway, if not more.

Actually........it does apply, depending on where the content is licensed. If you're downloading copyrighted material, administered through the RIAA, you can indeed be sued. The Canadian government is being very helpful with that.

Remember, it's not where you live, it's who owns what you're downloading. How else do you think sites like Suprnova and the like got shut down, when they're hosted in places like Sri Lanka and Kuwait? And, yes, you can be held liable as an accessory, if somebody from the States happens to be downloading from you.

And, as an added note. ASCAP, BMI, and the others also have Canadian divisions, along with Canada's own licensing companies. They're involved with the lawsuits as well.

Despite what Canadian courts said last year, you can still be sued by US agencies for theft.
