|
ok simple and plain, i tried re-installing xp because of a lsass.exe error that caused my computer to restart every time i connected w/ dsL on the internet. Now, my computer boots, the dell screen shows, and then the setup says that it is restarting, but then all i get is a black screen, and one 2 inch in height line in the middle of my screen of what looks like the setup, but just one bar of it across the whole screen. I gave my friend the disk to see if its a defected disk, and he scratched it up. Besides telling him to get me a new xp cd, what should i do? I have alot of business to do and im in an emergency with time. If anyone can help please list whatever i need to get, or any steps i could take to solve this problem.
Thank you |

Try using a disc doctor to repair the disk.
When you tried to reinstall, did you do a full or quick reformat? Always do a full reformat and try to reformat it again. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

The problem you had before will be caused by the sasser worm, this ends the process of lsass.exe which causes the system to shut down...well, if my memory serves me right, thats the problem you had.
And yeah...allways do a FULL FORMAT. _________________ »4 RS«»1Ж «»1 DENE«»1 FREAKIN LAME OH«»1 MONEY MONEY«

Make sure the CD rom is the first thing set in your boot sequence. You will have to set this in your bios. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

| the cdrom is already the first thing that loads, i just dont have the cd anymore cuz the person who wanted to check the disk out scratched the (bad word) out of it. i did the safe mode thing, but the boot goes straight to the continuation of the installation. I want to know if theres a way i can stop the re-installation of the OS i already had on there (xP) and get around it that way, then i can work on the fixing of the sasser worm i have, because to do anything i still have to just get to windows. |

Yup. For future reference, a FULL format is in order. Its also a good idea to get some kind of antivirus too. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

DISCONNECT YOUR COMPUTER FROM YOUR DSL MODEM ... i'm guessing your connected using a NIC card and not USB. So if thats the case install XP and turn on the firewall under network connections before you connect it... or your antivirus software... this happened to me and like you said happens everytime i reformated and installed xp WITH MY INTERNET PLUGGED IN. _________________ Remember When Sex was safer than racing???

Have you gotten the cd back yet? You need to do the full format with the internet unplugged. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

there are methods for re-surfacing scratched discs, I have a disc doctor that works pretty well, I would make your "Buddy" replace your OS...NOW _________________ Yeah....... ok |

A work around not having an XP cd... I'm not sure if the newer ones work, but the old (2001ish has been tested) DELL reinstall XP cds will actually install Windows XP (Home or Pro) without a keycode. The cd uses the keycode specific to the Dell's keycode, but if its already in use, you cannot "activate." However, as long as you (like in your case) have a legit keycode that is not being used, you can click the activate...then say activate over the phone...then click update keycode and type in yours! Then update and go back and activate.
Works great when you can't find/damage your XP cd. |

Please refrain from comments unless you are trying to help . . . end of discussion.
As for your problem Mat, does it give you any options after it says it needs that much disk space? You may need to format the drive first or make sure the drive is big enough. How big is it? You will probably need 3GB+ for XP.
If you did a full format, you should have a blank drive but you will need to recreate a partition and do another full format while keeping the computer unplugged from the internet. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

i WAS trying to help. I was just saying that dell makes, er, not top-notch eipment, and since this is most likely hardware, the problem is probly that dell either didn't put in uality stuff, or made the equipment sound better than it is when you baugt (can't spell for beans (spell for beans? i'd rather just go buy some)) the computer.
ok, here's my $.02 (mexican(a.k.a. i'm probly wrong )) it sounds to me like either a video, or cd-rom problem, probly the later. it might have been a cd problem (now there DEFINATLY is), but i don't know.
Ok, thought: if you got the time, if your computer is still under dell warenty, i think they have a disk replacement thing that they can send you, so i'd try to get that going, and if that disk doesn't work, well, guys? _________________ ÿ (0255) 愛

once again, this better be something legal, like you aren't going to download songs or any other copyrighted material, right? _________________ ÿ (0255) 愛
