As you may already know, you can download additional XP themes for Windows XP. However, you need to install a third party software such as TGT Soft StyleXP. TGT Soft StyleXP comes with a 30 day trial period and once the period ends, you cannot use the downloaded themes. Even if you uninstall the software and reinstall it, it will not run once the trial period has ended. You will just get a popup window asking you for a registration key code. Well, here is a method that will enable you to use downloaded themes without the hassle of registration! The best part is it's legal and it's free thanks to TGT Soft who was generous enough to make this patch! Just follow the steps below...

First, you must have administrator privileges.
Second, you must understand how to rename and copy files.
Third, you must understand where your system directory is and how to navigate there (although the patcher will tell you where it is).

**If you update your Windows(r) XP operating system, the patch may become invalid.**

1) Download uxthemepatcher.zip.

2) Run the uxthemepatcher.exe. This program will produce a uxtheme.pat file in your system32 directory. If this program fails, DO NOT CONTINUE.

3) After you have successfully run uxthemepatcher.exe, a message box will tell you where the uxtheme.pat file is. If your system directory is c:\windows\system32 -- the uxtheme.pat file will be there. If it is c:\winnt\system32 -- the uxtheme.pat file will be there. And so on. Make a mental note of where the .pat file is.

4) Assuming your system directory is c:\windows\system32 go into the directory c:\windows\system32\dllcache. This directory will be hidden. If it is, click on Tools\Folder Options\View and uncheck the option that says Hide protected operating system files (recommended)

5) Rename the uxtheme.dll file in dllcache to uxtheme.bak (or some other name).

6) Rename any uxtheme.dl_ or uxtheme.dll that might be found in other locations on your system such as c:\i386 or the place where you installed Windows(r) XP from.

7) Make sure you have NO CDs in your system (especially the Windows(r) XP install CD!).

8 ) Assuming your system directory is c:\windows\system32 go into the directory c:\windows\system32. Rename uxtheme.dll to uxtheme.bak or some other name. Rename uxtheme.pat to uxtheme.dll.

9) You might get a warning from Windows System File Protection. You need to answer the two questions properly, and on your own volition to ensure that the uxtheme.dll file is not replaced with the original.

10) REBOOT the system. Do not logoff, you need a full reboot.

Here are a few good places to get your WinXP themes, not to mention skins, wallpapers, and more for your viewing enjoyment

- http://www.wincustomize.com/ - a ton of skins for many different apps, themes, and much more

- ThemeXP.org - the de facto in WinXP Themes and wallpapers *Editor's Choice*

- XP Mania - small selection of top notch WinXP Themes
