|
|
Dell 20in monitor i got for 175$ CAD.
had it for a few years... beige, ugly
Girlfriend painted it all silver (and a damn good clearcoat after)
i cut out the top, and put in a piece of plexiglass and a fan, a bit of wire sleeving
and lighting
using the PSU in the computer for power, had problems with the inverter causing interferince with the tube, till i put it behind the shield |

Small tip for anyone going to try this:
All CRT tubes produce radiation, both EM and X-ray! don't remove any of the metal pannels or screening inside the case, it can damage your monitor and you can affect the level of radiation produced (not good). check first that there are no pannels directly under the case that will be in the way, before moding.
The metal in the case also protects the electronics, magnetic and electrical radiation (EM) produced by other devices (drills, fans, CPUs etc) can cause interference with the monitor. Try standing one upside down, if it's cheap, it'll go funny colours, if not then it will stay about the same but will be slightly out of line or fuzzy. this is caused by the earth's weak magnetic field.
Your very costly monitor could end up with a picture that looks like it only cost $10 from a junk shop!
Follow those rules and you will be OK.

waited about a month before i touched it (was seriously scared of the leftover voltage)... the screen was so high quality it had about 10 layers of metal(ok so more like 3) all around... i just removed the top one... so far no ill effects, and all that radiation is flying out the back...(or top)
hmm maybe with all that radiation fly out the back/top i can get rid of a few overly noisy neighbors |
