i use sbc yahoo dsl and am being forced to use the software to connect to the internet... this is because my loussy linksys router burnt out on me.
so i have to modem connected directly to my pc and i want to share the connection,... so i plug my bro's pc into it and the lan cards do not detect that they are connected. i have done all the wizards and stiill nothting.
the distance in cable length between the pooters is 100ft.
i have the connection 2 shared with connection 1 right now and if i share connection 1 with connection 2 it will change connection 1's i.p. to 192.168.x.xxx and with that i cannot connect to the internet.
connection 1 is internet it is occupied by the modem feed.
connection 2 is my bro's pc
connection 3 is empty
btw conn. 1 and 2 are on board #1 is the gigabit lan #2 is the nforce lan

No fair.. that was my guess.

Look at the end of cabel on the bottom of the RJ45. You should see a buch of wires. I think it goes white-orange, orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, wthite-brown, brown. That is for a straight cable. If it does not look like that, then ou are using a corss-over cable or just a screwed up cable in general.

Not so....there are only two Accepted methods (google time) for standard...Anybody who would sell anything else is goofy.

what Ham was refering to is, if you are trying to connect the computer directly together no router or switch then you will need whats called a "cross over" cable. The reason why its called a cross over is that there are wires that have to go to different pins so that the two computer are able to talk directly with one another. If you are going thru a router or switch then you can use a normal (straight through) cat-5 cable.

Fresh for the immediate debate, but still.....the order you stated does not fit one of those standards....lol although i believe thats what we use here at work.....but theyre homemade.....=P

Fresh is okay, that's the 568B standard.
In short runs several configs will work...But if you start getting into longer runs of cat 6, for a gig over copper network the pairs gotta be right or you'll get into some "slow-motion."

yes, well am i correct in believing that unless u have windows 95 or windows 98 the crossover feature no longer works? When i learned how to make my own CAT 5 wires, i remember the guy telling me that.

Also yes, the standards are there becuase it helps form an electrical shield around the wire, making disturbances less common. If can like 2 old said, use pretty much any configuration for short distances, but they have less of a shield and u can get much more interfierence.

Nope, the NIC requires the cross over cable, otherwise the read line is on read on the other NIC and ditto with the write ( I Simplified, don't need it explained to me, I'm quallified as a tech) Result is neither NIC can comunicate.
Regarless of what OS you are using the lines must be crossed over, this is usually taken care of by the hub/router etc. Same applies to connecting 2 hubs together, if one doe'nt have a dedicated "uplink" then a crossover will be needed.

There are exceptions to this though, some NICS have the abillity to work with an ordinary cable and use it as if it were a crossover. this require the setting ennabled on the cards EEPROM. Most do not have this feature.

no, thats not what i was saying, I was under the impression that the OS could no longer support the cross over function even with the crossover cable and therefore newer operating systems couldnt be connected using the Crossover. not like u could use a regular cable. Sorry, i should have clarified, although im still probably wrong. :)

it's the NIC that does the crossover, not the OS, so no matter what OS you use, a crosover will still work. the OS does'nt know the difference. As long as the NIC can comunicate then the OS will take that data, no matter where or how it came to be there. There are some problems running in a 'peer to peer' config under windows, but if set up correct will function just the same.

Only for the distance that he opened the cable up to twist it. Think about it...It's a cross-over.
