Ok the scanner mod.

Basically i took apart this old scanner that i had when i saw the bulb and decided i wanted more light in my keyboard... so i unscrewed all of the supports and what not and took out the bulb to discover that it has the same exact connection as a cold cathode... i plugged the sucker in and was running it to see if it would explode and all seems well, i also have this nifty on and off switch im looking to hook up with it if i can figureout how to eh... it looks like i can sodder the leads onto a power switch just like the cold cathode is set up... is this right... just someone confirm that im not going to blow up... hahaha man this is sooo cool and so bright... i probably shouldnt look into it.

Actually most gas vapor tubes can be run as cold cathode. you should'nt cause any damage, just as long as the tube is fairly close to the rating of the inverter. if the inverter is too strong it could damage it's self. just check for heat and a high pitch "ringing" from the transistor.

Looks purdy though :)

you cold also use the backlights from an old LCD laptop display.

THAT AWESOME>>> MUST NOT SLEEP TWEAKING TO BE DONE... im actually going to take a unused usb cord... and cut it revealing the power wires... im going to sodder them to the on off plug and im going to put the light in my keyboard and light it up at night/// :) man i love modding stuff brb, ima see how this works eh.

ok... actually as i look at the cold cathodes,,, and the pretty blue inverter box that they are attached to im thinking soddering this thing to the usb plug power wires wouldnt work... would it?

Ahh, I see where you are going with this (re read the post) yeah you can run the three lamps off the same inverter, you can solder them in series. I would'nt try a parralel connection, might damage the inverter (changes the load and would pull more power). the inverter should just about handle the extra lamp, though non will be getting the full voltage and may be a little dimmer but should'nt be noticable.

I do the odd bording party now and again, though mainly to Mac user sites that slag off the PC when they blatently dont know what they are talking about.

I think I will be hanging about for some time yet :)

got a few projects in the pipline, should be coming online soon. Water cooling, pelts and freon (the old stuff not R13a)

man, this is soooo sweet... I took out another piece that was connected into the scanner and it had the same head as the lead going into the blue inverter for a cold cathode... so after some soddering, finding an old flshlight, more soddering, i have both cold cathodes, and this new scanner bulb working... The cold cathodes are like before, i didnt change any of their configuration. I simply put the flashlight that i modded to get an on off switch, in the line of wire from the small scanner piece and then in turn soddered it to a psu plug thats actually attached to the cold cathode, so all my lights are in one piece i can take out... its kinda hard to explain but i have no more mini cds so until i go to the store, sry no pics.. Thanks SS and everyone else for the help!!! this is really cool

I seem to remember some older scanners or photocopiers that had these blindgly bright green light, though I think i remember these as haszardus due to the high levels of UV radiation. not sure about it now. Anyhow, one of these could be a contender

get three and make a 'Flux capactitor, though quite where you get the 1.21Gwats of power out of a PSU is a bit beyond me ..... :)

1.21 gigawatts . . . easy. I would have to say to get it from a bolt of lightning. Do not really try this b/c it would be very dangerous.

Hmmm, whats is a good way to test for lots of UV radiation? Put your arm in front of the bulb for 5 minutes to see if you get a burn? really?

Oh yeah.. But if you are worried.. just make a shade out of PVC pipe. Cut it in half and rig mountson the side... drill a hole for the wire to fit though and WALA

its inside my case actually, i dont know if u have looked / seen my case but by the front fan grills, there is a small spot on the bottom that it fits in and i now have illuminated fan grills... next im going to make my keyboard black, and glow red :)

no, u have to cut see through glass / acrylic, and change out the back of the boards that arnt see through with that, then you put the lights on the back of the keyboard, and it glows through! i have a guide here if u want it eh.

dunno anout making the keyboard glow red, but I can make it glow green in the dark............. wana buy some Uranium 235?

Actually, there is a glass that is VERY rare now, it is a Victorian invention. URANIUM GLASS!! it glows a freeky green colour and even glows vivid green under UV light. I'm told it's not too dangerous, about the same risk as a microwave oven (yeah but my Microwave does'nt make my gums bleed and my hair fall out, well not since I fixed the dodgey door catch).

BTW, it's quite easy to build your own cold cathode tubes, all you need is a narrow glass tube (chemistry supplies) and 2 small electrodes (bit of old tungston light buld filiment. you can create a vacuum int the tube using a cheap Vacuum pump (lab supplies) and get UV (Both types of UV) or fill the tube by flushing Neon (red) Argon (blue) or Helium (VIVID white) all of which are easy to obtain in small cylinders. doesnt't need high pressure, 1 atmos will work (sea level pressure). You need a bunsen burner or similar to heat the glass to bend it to shape and seal the ends up.

I read about someone using Helium and PVC tubing (did'nt last long as helium can escape through PVC, that and he was using a VERY big tesla coil!)

worth a try.

um... yes of course... doesnt everyone know that :), im thinking after getting all those supplies it would be cheaper to just buy a dual cold cathode for 6 bucks...

but um yea, the glass is easy i have it all and i know what to do for this mod, unlike my messing around with a scanner lmao

Just like that, only i know a trick that i guess i will share with everyone else to be able to make a very rich color. If you take the plastic wrap, thats different colors, party supply kinda, and wrap it several times around the colc cathode, then tape it off, about 5 times on a white one and you will have a nice darker color of ur choice !
