I'm thinking about making a blowhole in the top of my PC, it has 2 stock fans on the side window (slots for 4 other, i have one spare but no screws) but I'm not exactly how to do it.. I would assume just get everything out, tape it up, and cut it (i've never done case modding, btu i grew up in a workshop... litteraly... so i know my way around saws and tools) anyways, if any fo you have done it just gimme some pointers, danke

I'll post some pics of my case so you can see the size restraints, btu that'll be in the case gallery

ok ive never actually cut a case either.....but i too have lots of experience with wokring with metal and cutting tools and soldering and blah blah........=]

yes of course take everything out.......measure the diameter of the INNER DIAMETER of the fan blade housing.........in other words......get a grease pencil and make some marks....make the hole slightly larger than the diameter of the blades......=] I would use a dremel with a fin grain blade, as to not ruin the finish of the case........oh yeah....and DONT SLIP.......i recommend doing all this totally sober.....=P

dont forget about screw holes.....=]
with these, you can either drill a small hole for screws.....and let the screws tap themselves in for a good tight fit.......i personally would use a bolt, just cuz i like to tkae things apart alot and im sure i would strip some self made self tapped screw holes in about two weeks......=]

Yeah..take everything out and tape it up good, a 3" hole-saw works perfect, way easier than a dremmel!

and thanks TH, i'll have to save your post so I don't dos omething wrong Razz i'm sure i have a dremel around here somewhere.. this house without a tool is unheard of.... i'mm still scared to do it though this case wasn't to expensive, but if i F it up it's the only case i've got.. and i'm nto exactly rolling in money

these guy are pointing you in the right direction. What I have the easiest is to place the fan where you want it to be installed (but on the outside of the case after taping the area up with masking tape that away when you are working you dont scratch the area) and mark the ID of the fan shroud on the case and also mark the location of the mounting holes. Be very careful to make sure the fan doesnt move when making these marks. then you can either use the hole saw or a dremel. Then just drill the mounting holes just a little bit larger than the fan mounting screws that you either get with the fan or can buy by themselves.

But before doing any cutting take everything out of your case!! you dont want little metal filings being lodged anywhere on the electronics. Then when you are done blow the case out very well and wipe everything down.

WHAT!?! i think he meant smaller.......if they were larger.....the standard fan screws wont axctually hold anything to your case......=]

The screws bite into the plastic of the fan housing. You dont want the screws to bite into the case as that is not what holds the fan in place. The screw just passes thru the panel and pulls the fan tight up against the case.

is that understandable? damn I wish I could use a pic to show what I mean.

I'M BACK!!!! for my usual orgy of posts that is.

i found the best way to make a hole is to put some tape down where you want the hole, place the fan over the whole and trace the inside. i usually use a drill to put a hole in the case big enough to get a jig saw in. i like cutting with a jig saw b/c it is clean and easy to use. when i'm done, i will either use a dremel with a sanding drum or just regular sand paper to clean up any sharp edges.

dremels and hole saws will also work great.
you will definately want to take out all the innards of the case before you tinker with it.

now you guys can get back to your orgy with your 2 biological fathers

although i have a rivet gun, i find it is much easier and sturdier to leave the top connected to the case. i almost forgot to say that you may need a stiffening rib or two put in to help with rattling as the integrity of some cases may be lost. a gasget or seal of some sort is also a good idea to keep away those rattles and dampen fan noise.

i just thought i'd share that with you sick b@$t@rd$
