|
|
Ok, here are my system specs...
AMD 64 3200+
ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 128MB
SoundBlaster Live! Sound Card
512MB Kingston DDR400 PC3200 RAM
250GB Hitachi 7200rpm 8mb SATA Hard Drive
CD-RW Drive
DVD-RW Drive
all in...
a Plastic Gazelle PC Case
(http://www.thecrucible.ca/reviews/justpc899/) <<<a review of the case w/ specs
The problem is is my comp is wayyy too hot, and the case has VERY few options for cooling. It has one intake fan location in the bottom for a 120mm fan and one case fan on the back for an 80mm fan.
I need suggestions as to what fans /air flow i should use to make sure this computer runs cool and doesnt overheat.
Considering I only have room for ONE intake fan and ONE exhaust fan, I need some opinions!!
Help guys!!!! |

I would intall a blowhole on top but this will require some handyman work.
But it is well worth it. _________________ Abit Max3, Intel2.4@ 3.42, 9800pro 460core/380mem., 2 Raptors raid0 |

Btw post your cpu, system, and case temps.
This will help to see where the heating problem is coming from. _________________ Abit Max3, Intel2.4@ 3.42, 9800pro 460core/380mem., 2 Raptors raid0 |

How do i check my temps across my whole system? Do i need to download a program or just look at it when i'm starting my computer by going into my BIOS?
And what do you mean by blowhole? |

I just downloaded some kind of program called "motherboard monitor 5" and it says my case temp is 35degrees Celsisus and my cpu temp is 50degrees celsius.
I dont know how to get any other temps...? |

what kind of motherboard do you have? go to their website and you will be able to download a program to check your system and cpu temps.
a blowhole is an exhaust fan at the top of your case. it uses the principle that hot air rises to cool your system. the fan on the top pulls all of the warm air that usually pools at the top of your case and will exhaust it upwards. these are a great way to drop temps when you really need it.
watercooling would not be a bad idea at all if the blowhole doesn't help much.
as for fan configuration, people usually pull air in from the front/bottom of the case and ehaust it through the back/top of the case. this is the best method of cooling by air. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

I have an Albatron K8X800 Pro motherboard for AMD 64 processors.
I went to www.Albatron.com.tw and they dont have a program for monitoring temperatures.
A big problem with installing a blowhole on the top of the case is that it is a plastic external case with a full steel internal structure, so making a hole would be near impossible anywhere on the case.
So, I guess the best i can do besides watercooling, is just getting a REALLY powerful fan for the bottom of the case blowing air in and the back of the case blowing out.
So, on bottom, i got room for a 120mm fan and on back i got room for an 80mm fan. Should I go for the Loudest / most Powerful fans i can find and then just install 'em in both spots?? |

match the air flow for both fans (intake/exhaust) and you should be fine. And even tho your outter case is plasic it is still possible to install a fan. It just takes some handyman work but this course is not for everyone. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

Definitely not for everyeone! It would take dremelling the outer plastic case and then the inner steel case to get though to make a hole...basically not an option for me at all.
I'm thinking about getting this fan (Thermaltake Smart Fan II)
http://www.xoxide.com/thersmarfani.html
and using it probably set at 75 CFM
THEN, getting an intake 120mm fan for the bottom using this fan (Thermaltake generic 120mm fan)
http://www.xoxide.com/ther12casfan.html
with set speed of 78CFM
That was the closes MATCH i could find on www.xoxide.com in terms of CFM's
I was also thinking of getting a slot cooler to put in one of the PCI slots I have to help cool the case. Anyone have any suggestions on good or recommended slot coolers?? |

You definitely need to install a blowhole of get a new case altogether with a blowhole incorporated already. _________________ Owner & Administrator

getting a new case is sort of not an option for me either cause i dont know how to put a computer together. i just know how to install drives, plug in stuff, etc.
So, any thoughts on the fans i'm proposing to get?
Also, what about that PCI slot fan? Is that worth getting?
I need a realistic option using this case...if you actually see the case you would see how difficult installing a blow hole would be. |

| By the way, i moved my whole tower to a different/better location that is more in the open and my idle CPU temp is 46deg. Celsius and it says the case temp is 33deg. Celsius. So that's about -5degress better. And i'm sure after installing the 120mm intake fan, that will help keep it a LOT cooler, right?? |

The rear 80mm stock fan is already in there, but there is no 120mm intake fan yet.
So, currently, all I have running is the one 80mm back exhaust fan.
I'm gonna order a better and louder 80mm exhaust back fan and a 120mm intake fan tomorrow and install that ASAP. I was just asking if those fans were any good and also if the PCI slot fans were worth getting to help cool it as well. |

Those Thermaltake fans should do nicely. And the location is important too as you have just learned. Because if the air that is being pulled into your case is warm its not going to cool your pc.
So my advice for right now is get the two fans installed and see where than leaves you. You may not need the PCI slot fan. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

Yea, the intake will definitely help.
Get one that pumps about 40cfm and you will be perfect. _________________ Owner & Administrator

The Vantec looks a bit too loud.
The Thermaltake II Smart Fan 80mm for the back pumps 74 CFM at maximum speed and the intake 120mm fan on teh bottom pumps about 77 CFM into the computer.
So i think i'll go for those fans and just switch 'em on highest settings. you guys think that would be good? |

PerMod,
Yes sir if you use those fans you should cool nicely. You could even look into fans a little quieter that flow about 48-55 cfm. But what you list will perform very well. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

Thanks guys, can't wait to get 'em installed and then see my new temps!! You guys helped out a lot.
Now if only Far Cry would run at 1024x768 on all "very high" settings...currently it can only do that at 800x600
and that's with my AMD 64 3200+ cpu w/ ATI Radeon 9800 PRO 128mb and 512mb DDR400 PC3200 RAM |

Hey guy...i have 2 Vantec Tornado's in my case and also a thermaltake 74CFM fan...these babies PUUUUUUUUSH some air! Case temp full load ~33 Celcius and CPU Full load ~36...i like it!!! That is with water cooling also, with just 1 80MM Rad that came with the swiftech kit and the thermaltake 74CFM Fan on it...and the 2500+ barton overclocked to 3200+
Just get a tornado and put it in the back sot, you'd be surprised at just how much it will lower your temps. My cpu and board temps just before his mod were about 50 full load CPU and about 45 mainboard full load...that is also with my Barton 2500+ Overclocked to 3200+... |
