I'm getting ready to overclock my CPU and my Graphics Card (ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB). I live in So Cal and i know for a fact its going to be scorching this summer. I have a few questions though about cooling before I start with my overclocking process. First, I'm pretty sure I have good air flow, but I want to know if it is really needed to get a better heatsink/fan than the stock Intel P4 one. The reason I am asking is, many times I see someone with an overclock at 3.4 GHz+ and they are using stock cooling, and many times I see them with heatsink/fan, so I just want to know if it is really needed to do this. My next questoin is, for overclocking my graphics card, would I need perhaps a better cooling system such as this.... http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-186-110&depa=1
If I do get a new heatsink/fan and one of these arctic things for cooling my graphics card I will be using the Arctic Silver 5 compound so that should help to. Thanks. _________________ CASE ASPIRE ATXA2XPW-BL/420

Its not exactly required to get a new heatsink and fan for the processor but
you would most likely get a higher o/c with a good copper heatsink.
As far as the card that heatsink seems like it would do the job.
Might wanna add some ramsinks to the back of the memory.

wait are you OCing what you CURRENTLY have???
or did you not update your sig yet?......lol
just a heads up......MAKE sure sure you have good airflow......match intakes with exhausts, and a blow hole would help get rid of those hot air pockets....=] _________________

For longevity it is best to have the best cooling possible. So yes going with a good thermalright HSF is a good idea. And yes you can OC with the stock HSF but it is not ideal to do this.
Yes hot air in your pockets is bad. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

well...i have finally decided to not be stingy with my cooling and get a new HSF, the VGA Silencer graphics card cooler, and some new artic silver 5 compound. If anybody has some suggestions for a good but relatively cheap (not over 35 bucks please) hsf for the Socket 478 P4 that can support a good OC (something like 3.3-3.4 or so) please let me know. If anybody has had an overly good experience with a special hsf let me know of that too. Thanks _________________ CASE ASPIRE ATXA2XPW-BL/420

the HSF is not rated for overclocking.
As we have said time and time again, go with a thermalright copper heatsink.
Don't worry about the VGA silencer, put the money into a good cooler. _________________ Owner & Administrator

well i understand to get the best overclock with no artifacts on your radeon 9800 you need some type of third party cooling, and i also understand that the VGA silencer is a huge helper. Anyways for the HSF, i can't really shell out like more than 30 bucks for it and the cheapest thermalright heatsink (without the fan) that is copper is 40 bucks on newegg _________________ CASE ASPIRE ATXA2XPW-BL/420

i doubt it will make much a difference, if anything probably 1 degree lower (celcius). I have a questin though, now that I think of it, i don't even know if i need a hsf or any new cooling for that matter, because I am guessing my current air flow and stock hsf is doing a good job, or i think so cuz my temps aren't bad. At idle i am receiving like 32ish for CPU and 24ish on motherboard, at full load on Prime95 for like 6 hours i'm at 50ish CPU and 27ish on my motherboard. From what I understand that is not unsafe considering I am overclocked at 3.2 right now with fairly tight timings, and my raddy is overclocked as well. _________________ CASE ASPIRE ATXA2XPW-BL/420

aaaah..the whole non-edit thing is starting to get to me lol. Anyways, i just checked with AsusProbe in the fan section and it says my CPU fan is working at 3040. I thought maybe that I am supposed to run it at higher speeds which is why it is changing like 20 degress C when i go from idle to full load. Most of the time i see the idle and full load temps 8-10 degrees C between each other. _________________ CASE ASPIRE ATXA2XPW-BL/420
