PostPosted: Sun Apr 11, 2004 10:51 pm    Post subject: water coolers Reply with quote

dood, i am a complete and utter noob to water cooling i have an aero 7+ that is lapped to a 1200 grit(basically a mirror) and its great for my mobile 2500+ just as long as vcore is below 1.7. but now i have started to realize how heavy this cooler is and am now looking for a water cooler.
what would be a good choice, remember i am new to water cooling.

Swiftech H20-8501A - Socket A / 370 or koolance exos

i hate the thought of water in my rig but it will get rid of the noise, the excess weight on the mobo, and more efficiantly cool. so any help is respectfully accepted.
thanks,
gmoneyhobbit

mid day while is hot outside 35-40 idle 40-45 while playing unreal tournament 2004

night while its cool 33-38 idle 35-42 playing unreal tournament 2004
all in celcius
all of this is with 1.575 vcore running at 2.3ghz with all the fans full force, its damn loud with the aero blower, tt sf 2, and vantec fan card plus the other 8 fans(p/s included)

bios reads the mobo temp or "ambient" temp to be 95-100f usually the mobo temp is the same as the proc, my hardcano says that the case temp is 83f- 28c(the probe is hanging in the mid section of the case, in front of the hdds)

i agree that the temps are reasonably good but when i o/c to about 2.6 ghz with the vcore at 1.8 volts temps skyrocket the cpu gets to about 120-125f (this is at night with the window open and fresh cold air blowing in with a box fan)
so overcloking above 2.3ghz, what im at now, is irrational with this form of cooling.

i was thinking of upgrading all fans to tt smart fan 2s and ungrading this crappy hardcano for a hardcano 12. do you think this would create a better cooling effect for the cpu and othe components?
thank

instead of the hardcano, you may want to try a thermalright heatsink with a nice 92mm fan (sp-97 heatsink is awesome).

not sure about the fan question . . . theoretically if it moves more air (greater CFM) then it should have a much better cooling effect.

i have also heard to reach some extreme speeds on amd platforms, the northbidge and southbridge cooling must be updated. i am in the process of updating mine and i'll let you know if that helps. (i just need to fabricate a new s/b heatsink)

i am fully aware of thermalrights cooling capabilities, THEYRE EXTREME.
but my initial thought when i see one is the EXTREME weight and tension placed on the mother board. the last thing i want is a broken dfi lan party and a smashed aiw 9800 pro. i also realize that many people have great success with these coolers and people never have to worry about them, however, as scarface would put it " i am, how you say, paranoy ". but if you recommend it dood i gotta give it a chance. oh yeah i would also have to order the x-plate for an additional charge.
as for the north and southbridge cooling, i have been planning on this guy : MCX159-A. and as far as southbridge you can see the active cooling in the case gallery "xaser from hell"
yo yo the bud makes you wiser
thanks and all comments are welcome

Thermalrights are not that hard on the socket seeing they don't stick out a whole lot.

You need to upgrade your case ventilation.

That is your problem right now.

i have a xaser 3 as yall know, it comes with seven .1 amp fans rated at 30 cfm. 2 lower intake fans in front of the hdd trays : stock
2 side intake fans located to the side of add on cards : stok
2 rear exhaust fans : upper stock, lower tt smart fan 2
1 top blow hole in all aspects is located in the middle of roof : stock
now all of the fans grills have been removed http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=9c0cde8a2706dfc106bd9cbac9e52132&threadid=270542&perpage=30&pagenumber=2
my vantec stealth is 520w with 3 fans 1 is 80x80x25mm the other 2 are 80x80x10mm i dont have a clue as to how much air this pushes
i have a vantec spectrum fan card which pushes 30cfm there is an empty space above it and below with the pci bracket below removed so air can flow it
i have an old soyo n/b fan on my southbridge heatsink, stock n/b cooler(which is adaquit because im at 400fsb)
stok cooling for my aiw 9800 pro( the tt smart fan 2 is supposed to exhaust the hot air from the card, the fan is directly above it)
i have no cooling for my corsair, as it is valueselect
i have 3 hdd : 1 maxtor 80gig, one wd se 80 gig both 8 mb cache they are storage so they dont pump out much heat. the other drive is the main...uh...drive... it is a maxtor 160 gig sata drive 8mb cache it is very warm all of the time. it is also isolated from all the other drives( it is in the middle lower bay) it looks like this...... space/satahd/space/wdse/space/maxtor80g

well basically thats it all of the wires are nice and tidy i just cleaned up even more this afternoon.

nice gmoney!

do you have any as5 on that hsf you have now? i just put some under my volcano 7+ and it dropped my load temps from 53C to 43C. the idle also dropped from 32C to 25C. i just put a minimal amount (barely enough to cover the cpu core) and have experienced an insane drop in temps. this is an upgrade from the white silicone that was provided with the 7+ hsf.

yes, yes, as5 ive had the stuff even before i lapped my h/s. when i applied it i rubbed a very small amount on the h/s where the cpu die would touch and (with a plastic bag on my finger) i rubbed a very this layer onto the cpu die.
what kind of cooler do you have for 25c?!?!?!?!? thats wicked awesome
do you think that i should put my new tornado on my h/s and ditch the aero fan?

i have a thermaltake volcano 7+ running on the median speed setting. normally when my cpu temp is 25C, my ambient temp is 20C. i haven't lapped the 7+ (yet . . .) but made sure to clean it and the cpu core itself thoroughly before i applied the as5. this is on an overclocked 2100+ runing at 2300mhz (10.5*219) @ 1.8v

frickity frick frick frick... im assuming thats a t-bred b core you got there. damn thats good o/c. what is it like a 550mhz o/c. 1.8 volts and those temps where do you live alaska!?!?
haha i need some better cooling here in san jose its been nearly 90 for the past few weeks. better cooling=higher vcore... higher vcore=higher o/c
higher o/c=fast fast fast. with 1.8 i get 2.6ghz stable as hell however current cooling makes that 1.8=120f. 120f=weak sauce.
do you think that my settup with the tornado exhausting air is killing the cooling effect for the cpu. the tornado is like 1 inch away from the cooler...hold on maybe ill post a pic of it. with my chitty digi cam
peace broheems

yup, its a tbred core. i am going to school in iowa right now. temps here are around 70F or so max this time of year with mild nights (40F). i really lucked out on this chip. i can't go any higher on the vcore or else my system wont boot. i'm looking for my other bios chip so i can try a new bios and push it some more.

hey, Logi. you want a cheap way to manage your cables? use electrical tape. it has worked wonders for my setup. cheap and very effective.

i just found some LockTies so i moved all my PSU cables and tied them to the side of my case next to my mobo, i think this helped a degree or two, not bad for a minutes time, my goal is to idle below 90F but im still floating about 96-97, its really heating up here (near san francisco), so im sure when those 105+ days come, ill really need to work on the cooling

yo logi... for the cable managment electrical tape is fine if youre jaydubya or what i did was go to frys electronics and got some "flex guard-flexible tubing" which is that plastic stuff that is split down the center and you just shove the wires in to it also all the little craks and crevises(uhh how do you spell that) are great for shoving wires into. you can also run wires through the bak side of the motherboard tray(i dont do this though). round cables spoof things up etc. its all up to you bro.
oh ye jaydub i wasnt tryin to put you on blast with the electrical tape thing abocve
peace

i should try that, im sure being round and not so contour, might help airflow off of the tubing, instead of getting lost in the pushed aside cables, thanks!

my mobo is pretty cool, right now its below 20 C, but its cooling off at night, i wish i didnt buy a case with a pre-made window, i really want to put an intake fan right over my CPU

i have the Raidmax Scorpio 868W, any ideas?

http://raidmax.com/products/products_display.php?&page_no=4&backnext=-1&cID=1

see how the side is designed, i dont think i can get a fan over the CPU, its a little up and to the left of where the fan is in the middle

try making a duct mod from the side window to straight over the cpu??? i did that for one of my cases (doesn't have a window) and it lowered temps about 3-4C degrees.

hey gmoney . . . did you have that 2?00+ palimino that hit 10*219 @2.0v or something like that? if you did, then kudos to you because those pali's are a challenge!
