I was just wondering if NEMESKAL could give us a little info on how well his "deep impact" is working for him. I know there have been others that thought about getting one but didnt. And I was interested to see if it works as well as advertised.

i'd be more worried about the strain it would be putting on your socket and what it would destroy if it broke off.

I've seen his Deep Inpact limited edition and I don't think that you really have to worry much about it breaking off. I would just be careful moving it around . As for looks, I would say that its one of the better, if not the best looking cpu coolers out there. Installing it can be kinda tricky but patients is key. As for cooling, seems to be pretty good although all motherboards seem to put out different temp readings. I guess the fans that it came with aren't the greatest but thats not a huge deal. :) I would say that if you have the money then its worth it.

Just checked the weight.

580gms

Read this review:

http://www.modthebox.com/review297_1.shtml

And don't know where you getting your information that the weight won't affect it.

Too heavy and risky for my tastes when there are different safer heatsinks that don't run the risk of ripping your socket off.

Be vary careful, this could be rather costly.

I didnt get my info from anywhere. I wasnt saying that its light or anything. I know its somewhat of a risk and that its probably smarter just to get a lighter one but when we put the Deep Impact on it didnt seem like it could cause any damage, I mean the motherboard seemed sturdy enough. maybe it depends on the motherboard. idk i'd go with Nathan on this one. Anyways GL

heh makes me feel special. My thoughts on the deep impact are this...

If you have an amd.... Definitely STAY AWAY FROM IT because of the weight i read somewhere that some guys socket fell off. If you have a p4 then you should definitely be ok, even while transporting. Heh that is unless you motherboard is garbage and made of paper or something . Reason being that the Deep impact gives you a replacement retention module thing or whatever its called(normally little piece of plastic that fans hook to). This retention thing they give you goes on the back of your motherboard and the HS itself screws right in. So only way for damage to occur is if the HS were to litterally break through your motherboard. And yes i have done SOME transporting of it with absolutely no problems.

As far as cooling...

The fans it come with seem to work like hmm....nothing spectacular. I mean I dont seem to abnormally high temps, nothing low enough to brag about either. 2500rpm if i'm not mistaken and cool no better or worse really than anything else. However i imagine that a TT smartfan II would make this entire setup work amazing(i am currently looking into purchasing 2 SFII's).

Final thoughts... :) ( Just call me Nathan )

I purchased the 18k gold plated Limited-Edition for $54 After doing a lot of research. I am happy with it considering the stuff i read said it preforms better/same as thermalright HS with good fans and it looks cooler, i have a piece of *bling* *bling* in my case now and its different. Another + is the really cool way in which this thing cools the cpu and how completely(2 green led fans/2 blue led fans, possiblities are endless!) customizable it is. Its best described as half-water cooling i guess :) The regul;ar version of this i would still buy because like i said preformance is really good with better fans and its different and in my mind looks cooler. But remember STAY AWAY IF YOU HAVE AMD!

Pros:
-Completely Customizable
-Looks are nice(IMO)
-Cools very well w/ good fans
-*Bling* *Bling* Forget the wedding band get your bride-to-be this piece of 18k gold!

Cons:
-Too Heavy for AMD
-Could be considered a tad expensive for some

*Top Rank Award*

Tryed keeping TN's Style. Umm Nate if you need anyone else to help you review those nice things you now know who to call!

I tryed not to leave anything out if i did just tell me i'll try to answer it.

Thank You for the reply!

I wasnt thinking about getting the HSF tho I just wanted to know how it works since I have seen it around. It is a cool idea and like you say it is very easy to mod with different fans and such. And there are heavier HSF's out there like the Zalman CNPS-7000A-cu it weighs in at 773 grams. But then again there are usually drawbacks to anything that is "high performance". That I think is the fun of it all. :)

well this is the HSF that i was originally looking into...i got the jet4 beacause my local Money grubbing whore house (compusa.....no offense) offered it for like 24 bucks and i got my mobo the same day.....so i just HAD to put it together......i see that weight is a "problem"......what about fashioning some kind of support. The back of the case is surely a load bearing structure, perhaps some kind of swing arm or something........?

Or somehow attach a sling to your power supply to cradle the weight.

Would be a smart idea.

In all of my vast experience with Aerocool's line of products, no heatsink has had a greater socket-tearing, lan-party ruining effect than the new Deep Impact Limited Edition. At 580 grams, it would be disastrous and indeed, totally stupid to even consider this paperweight as an option for cooling your CPU. If you choose to go with this HSF, you'd better set your shiny new 9800 pro up with some heavy-duty kevlar or a miniature trampouline or something to avoid it from getting DEEPLY impacted, and not in a good way.

In short, it'll rip your socket out.

Consider yourself forewarned!

Well as Nem has already said on the P4 there is a backing plate that the HSF mounts too. So it would be impossible to "rip your socket off". But what it might do is warp the PCB. I had that happen to and MSI board when I was using my Zalman CNPS-7000A-AlCu. And that is only 445 grams. But I wasnt using a backing plate at the time since that MSI board just had that "clip-on" mounting bracket.

But with the weight and design of the Deep Impact I can see that might warp the PCB after it is used for a long period of time. So as Sir Tweaksalot mentioned earlier a sling setup would benefit greatly.

HAHa i love the comment about the video card experiencing "Deep Impact".
And yeah i guess your mobo could experience warping, i was just unaware that such a thing was possible.

you must admit though, for a desktop case laying horizontally, it would probably not be a bad cooler. it would not be recommended to have that thing in a vertical tower.

hehe, deep impact on video card - good one

Good point W.o.r. with the way everything is going in the CPU world they are going to have to keep using bigger and better cooling solutions. So mounting hardware may start including brackets to support the HSF from the case.

I know companies have been working on reducing the size of watercooling components. And making pumps that dont use any moving parts. Because at the current rate the CPU are going to be creating more heat than conventional methods are going to be able to dissipate. But with the new BTX form factor things could get rather interesting, but with that only time will tell.

speaking of laying the desktop case horizontally, would it be possible to mount the motherboard along the bottom if you had one of those 'cube' cases? i know they're meant for servers and all, just thought that would be pretty crazy if you could switch the mobo mounting holes to the floor of the case and some freaky wiring techniques to adapt all the wiring in the back to be able to handle it, have a huge resevoir hanging from the top to boost pressure, ect. lol now im gettin ideas...

i thought about that too.......looking at the cases on xoxide.com
not a bad idea......but with a case like that.......you may be abloe to lie the whole CASE on its side, and work from there.......maybe less work than moving the plug plate .....lol
just a thought
