|

Just wondering if anyone here has ever tried to lap a cpu?
Yea... yea... I know its risky but thats what makes life a little more fun.
I checked the top of my cpu with a straight edge and was suprised of how much the sides where raised up above the center.
As you might of guessed I said what the hell and got out the extra sandpaper I used on my heatsink. I was a lil worried to start with a grit any less than 800 grit so thats what I began with. ( does'nt take much with that) Then went to 1000grit and then to 2000grit. The copper began to show around the edges fairly well before the center became a mirror finish, so I decided to stop at that.
Now with the top flat with no light under the strightedge ( and a warranty of no use) I reinstalled it fired it up and ran a stress test at a 100%.
I was amazed to see the cpu temp. dropped by 9 deg.C after a long period of running time. Is it worth the risk? For me thats like asking is overclocking worth the risk, I sure think so. _________________ Abit Max3, Intel2.4@ 3.42, 9800pro 460core/380mem., 2 Raptors raid0 |

very cool. i have never heard of lapping the cpu. sure i've heard of heatsinks and northbridges and southbridges being lapped but never the cpu. kudos to you for having the balls to do it. that is an insane drop in temps!! _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Yea what makes even more scary is using water on the sandpaper. _________________ Abit Max3, Intel2.4@ 3.42, 9800pro 460core/380mem., 2 Raptors raid0 |

I've done it before too (on my 1.7 ghz p4 willamette core) and it did help a lot too. _________________ DiRoLoKo!! I fix robots and wear a bunny suit for a living.....the best job i ever had, most money i ever had :) |

I think the drop in temps. will vary depending on how flat the surface is to begin with. These are made from dies so the flatness will vary from cpu to cpu.
If anyone is having a heat issue with their cpu, might want to consider checking this. Like I said, the center on my cpu wasnt even close to touching the straightedge. I believe this was keeping my heatsink from making contact with the center of the cpu and this is where the most heat is generated.
If you get the same result as I did with a straight edge a thin layer of thermal paste might not be enough to completely fill the gap causing air pockets which is a no..no.
I know that lapping may be out of the question for some but a thicker layer of paste may be the way to go instead of a thinner layer if the edges are higher than the center.
After seeing the result by doing the lapping myself, I'm going to lap every new cpu that I buy sometime in the future. Even if it does void the warranty. _________________ Abit Max3, Intel2.4@ 3.42, 9800pro 460core/380mem., 2 Raptors raid0 |
