What would happen if you used no heatsink and instead just had a powerful fan (like a tornado) just blowing directly on your cpu? Would this work? _________________ 3.2@3.7 currently, highest so far 3.905.

never, !NEVER! use a cpu without a heatsink. even with the fan, the cpu would probably burn up. the heatsink is designed to increase the area that the heat can dissipate off. using a fan on just the cpu core would result in a very inefficient cooling solution. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Jay is right you HAVE to have a heatsink on the cpu.
The cpu creates so much heat that the small surface area cant handle it. It would just go up in smoke. But with the large chunk of metal, the heatsink, the cpu wicks the heat away from the core to the heatsink there by lowering the temps fo the cpu. It is thru this thermal conduction that the cpu lives. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

yea.. you have to have a heatsink to spead the heat out and have more surface area for the fan to cool it _________________ p4 3.0c @ 4ghz, Kingston hyperx pc3200 2X256 2-2-2-5 , abit ic7-g vdimm volt modded, Wd Raptor 36 gb

Ok, what about a heatsink without a fan, well cooled case, not overclocked? _________________ 3.2@3.7 currently, highest so far 3.905.

I wouldn't.
You can get some silent fans that are not even detectable.
Don't sacrafice your computer for a couple of decibels. _________________ Owner & Administrator
