Anyone ever take apart an older laptop just to add some memory and wind up with the CPU out as well?
.......that's what happened to me and when I found out that I could up the CPU from a 300 to 400MHz version.............I ordered one right up!

My question comes from when I started to put things back together and looked at the heatsink/fan that was being used on the CPU. It appears to be of the cast aluminum variety and is VERY porous(sp?) compared to today's versions. Has anyone ever given any thought to lapping the HS on their laptop? Or am I just getting wierd? I am already replacing the thermal pad that was in place with some Arctic Silver paste.....but was just curious.....

Never replaced the CPU, but thought bout it.

As far as lapping is concerned, I say go for it. Although you do want to be careful when lapping any HSF/cpu as it could end damaging ur system. Just make sure u start out with 2-400 grit SP and work ur way up (lowest - highest) to get best results, then clean the surface off with a napkin and add thermal compound to it as well.

Looks like u breathed new life into that old lappy! :)

Ok, I know that a change to a copper cooler would be great, but lapping is NOT a good idea. For the difference in thermal efficiency, do you really want to destroy your laptop? Replace the thermal grease, replace the cooler, but stop there. Anything more just would be too much.

Well...that's true, the cons could outweigh the pros if this is a laptop and cpu combo he couldn't afford to lose.

But if you really want to be the enthusiast and grasp every last ounce of speed/performance out of that machine then very carefully follow lapping procedures.

Personally tho, I'd just upgrade my memory (I'm not that much of a hardcore laptop modder) and after that upgrade the whole lappy. :)
