Can I get files from old to new PC via a Ethernet cable?

I'll be using my present PC's C drive as a D drive on my new PC. In my present PC I have a folder named My Downloads located on my C drive. Is it possible to connect the new old PC to the new PC via an ethernet cable and simply copy-paste folders from one to the other?

In other words, I want to do clean installs of all my apps on my new PC. I have copies of the apps/utilities (in zipped folders) in my C:\My Downloads.folder, and I'd just like to be able to drag the My Downloads to the new PC and click to install each app/ utility, Is this possible?

If I connect the new and the old PC via a Ethernet cable will the old's desktop, with it's folders, be displayed on my new PC's desktop?

Yes, you need to setup "File Sharing" between the 2 PCs. Set them up in the same "workgroup", and start sharing your folder on your "old" PC. You should then be able to browse this share from your new computer.

Or, you could just install Windoze on your new PC then physically move the drive from your old PC to your new PC, as Primary Slave. Which it sounds like is what you want to end up with anyway. All the files will just be sitting there..

The best way is to download the files to the second drive, then install the OS on the C drive.

and if you want to connect the two comps together you will need a hub or switch. If you dont want to go that route you would need a "cross over cable" to be able to connect the comps together directly without anything inbetween.

Could I burn a CD using my present PC (dragging the files to it I want) and then insert the CD into the new PC? Would they open?

The files are utilities I have downloaded. They are ready to dbl click to install on whichever hard drive I want.

Yes, you could easily do this. All you would have to do is install them again with your fresh windows installation.

I haven't made it clear that the apps/utilities I want are as they arrived downloaded to My Downloads.

I plan on keeping my present computer as functional as possible until the new one is stable

Is there a step by step guide to settting up File Sharing, I've never done it.

what OS you using?
unless it is really old, just right click the folder which houses all the files, and select sharing. then select the radio button to share it out. on the receiving pc, right click my computer and select Map a drive. put in the name of the host pc and the folder name
like this;
\\computername\foldername
and reconnect on logon.

make certain that the same user is created on both computers, and you'll be able to do the work via a crosspatch cable in no time at all.

Ooh! I like this! I shall concider doing that! I am so impatient! Especially if you are trying to transfer files form a CD-RW 1x! .. or was it.. 4x? which ever.. it was very slow.. and it hurts me every time I use it *clutches heart* ...
