Tweaking Proprietary Systems

I have a question thats been hard to get info on. I like to play the latest most hardcore games, but, I own an Emachines emonster 1000B and before you reply and say its a lost cause and to buy a different system, I would like to know what I can do to make this thing faster. About 3 years ago I installed a Riva TNT2 and that made a huge difference, now I want to go further all I can upgrade to is PCI and I have already maxed to 256meg ram.

I need to know what's the fastest ram I should install? Can I overclock this P3? Video cards? ram types? I want to spend some money and make it a project, short of spending the price of a new pc of course.

Lol dude that is s***. 256mb ram max! Lol the lowest computer I have has 384 mb of ram min. That is one piece of s***.

in my own humble opinion these upgrades are in order: motherboard, cpu, processor, ram, video card, and power supply. it would not be worth it to upgrade that computer.

you can't upgrade the ram, it would be useless to upgrade a video card in a pci slot, and the cpu is prolly not overclockable (edit: on that motherboard). you may not want to hear this but purchasing these components (in the first sentence) would be the best course of action. it would better to spend more money on a good upgrade now then to spend a little money on a half-asked upgrade now. you can keep everything else (hard drive, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers . . . etc) the case may also need to be upgraded if the psu won't fit or a more fans need to be purchased.
i hope i gave you a better idea on what should be done

indeed... absolutely right probably cheaper just to replace......
board, CPU, Videocard, ram, and PSU/Case.... the drives might be all you can keep...

If You really want to keep all the old hardware... look into a more recent PCI videocard.... i think there are FX5200's that are made for the PCI bus...
Ram... it's pc100 for that system, so it's alreadty maxed out... the board they used doesn't support any faster, or any more.

If you can find a board for sale somewhere based on the intel 810 chipset so you can keep the CPU and RAM, and even add to it, that would be the best bet. If you can get one that has an AGP 4x on it you can get a decent Videocard (anything higher than a 9600se), you'll be set for the next while

Excuse me, I don't think I remember saying his computer is crappy......

In his case, an upgrade to a PCI FX5200 is not going to get him up to par for playing recent games.

What he will need:

Motherboard
CPU
RAM
Case
Harddrive (if his drive is ATA66)
Powersupply

This can be done very cheap and you don't have to have the latest hardware to play these games, but you will have to leave your old system behind.

I know it's tough to swallow, but I'm trying to save you money.

i don't recall calling his system crappy either. i simply said that it wouldn't be worth it to upgrade on that platform.

JimmyZ . . . Nate's right, you won't get very far at all trying to upgrade that system. its about that time where u need to bite your lip and pull out a little more cash if u can (allbeit not much more cash).

The reason i suggested a 5200fx is cause it can do T&L which a TNT2 can't
i did a similar upgrade on a 750 duron and it made a crazy difference.....

But as was mentioned.... the biggest benifit would be a new board
Looking for cheap get an AMD system,
in Canadian $$$$
CPU 2500+ ~125$
Abit nf7 ~120$ (there are cheaper boards but i recommend the abit)
512 megs of ram ~120
Bout 60$ for a powersupply
and around ~100$ for a harddrive (if needed)

P4 would cost about 100$ more for the p4 2.6 and the board would be around the same(at the moment i would recommend something on based on the SIS655FX chipset as much as i hate to admit it, SIS actually has a good chipset )

Ok, so I guess I learned the hard way, buying a quick and easy system without doing the homework means its gonna be crap in 3 years. Damn! I think I'm gonna try and find one of those 128meg <$100 dollar video cards until I can scratch up the cash required for a new (for me)system. Dont have much experience building from the ground up, but i'm guessing its the most cost effective way to get to a kick azz machine? Is there a discussion topic around concerning the step by step way to 1. choose the components for the best gaming 2. not break the bank? I hear so many contradictions about
AMD v Intel, Nvidia v everything else. Wheres my best source of info on this?

I did not mean to blurt out like that.

I would just suggest that he get a new system. You could reuse some of the parts from that computer. Harddrives,Cd drives,Cables,etc.
