I know it's possible to have more than one operating system on a Hardrive, but I'm not sure how to install it. Also, will this have any adverse affects on my computer? I'm currently running windows 2000 and would like to also install windows XP. (just to see what all the rave is about)
Here is my set up:
OS: Windows 2000 pro
MOBO: Asus A7m 266-D (dual processor board)
Processors: 2 AMD 1800 1.546 ghz each
Ram: 1 GIG registered Corssair DDR ram
2 Maxtor 60 gig 7200 RPM Hard drives in a Raid 0, on a Promise Tx2 raid card.

Well, the best way to go about this is to use a partitioning program (such as partition magic) and split your disk in half (or 25/75% however you see fit, just as long as there's enough room to have both OS's installed. Once you have 2 partitions, win2k on the first, and a blank, NTFS, formatted partion as the second one, it's time to install XP Pro (don't try this at home...err...with home :)). XP pro detects that you already have one OS installed, and will set its bootloader up to give you a choice. Win2k might be smart enough to let you install XP Pro first and then 2k, but I wouldn't risk it. And, of course, always make backups of everything, because something inevitably goes wrong. Hopefully that was helpful, if not, catch me on one of my 4 messengers or by email :-) _________________ 2.4ghz 533mhz FSB P4, 512mb pc2700 DDR, 40gb ATA 100 7200rpm, Geforce 4 TI 4600, Audigy Gamer 5.1, Shuttle ss51g Barebones System, LiteOn 40x12x48 CD-RW |

| Thanks, very helpful. I will try to installing it on a new partion. Last thing, do you know if XP or Win 2K is better for graphics production? 2D and 3D. |

dynamic - What graphx program(s) will you be using?
I have Adobe Photoshop 6.01 running on WinXP Pro Corporate and everything's smooth on my end. As far as compatibility with other graphx applications, I haven't noticed any problems. |

I'm using Adobe Illustrator 10, Photoshop 7, Macromedia Studio MX. I plan on using Alias wavefront Maya later on. I read a review that XP is good but still to new to be recommended for graphics work stations.
Has anyone had problems with Win 2K the BSOD (blue screen of death) ? |

| I've run Win2k since it's release - and as of late haven't received a single BSOD. It has to be the most stable WinOS I've ever used (and I've used them all) - and I think 99% of those out there will agree with me. |

All the software you listed above is compatible with WinXP.
As for the Alias Wavefront : Maya software, versions 4.0 & 4.5 are compatible with WinXP Professional.
Personally, I recommend going w/WinXP Professional as it's stability is on par w/Win2k Pro and its security and feature set are extensive. All the software you've listed is compatible w/WinXP Pro, and from my own personal experience it runs superbly.
If cost is an issue w/you, then sticking with Win2kPro is just fine as the aforementioned software is compatible w/it as well. |

I frequently get BSOD crashes. I can not determine if there is a faulty driver, or even what to do if I did find it. Re install the driver?
I have a raid 0 set up, 2 60 GIG maxtor drives. I have a couple of devices sharing the same IRQ #, could that set up cause BSOD's ? |

God , I really do not like raid setups!
That will probably be the problem. _________________ Owner & Administrator

Well no - not necessarily dynamic. There could be several devices sharing the same IRQ and there won't be conflicts - there's been times where there are 3 devices sharing the same IRQ in WIn2k.
But if Win2k is causing probs - then just go for WinXP Pro! |
