I have purchased a Radeon 9600 graphics card for my son for XMAs. I am trying to install it, the motherboard has a slot for it, but the 172 pin connector is not there. This is the connector that you gently force the graphics card into. I have spent some time now on the internet trying to find one for purchase, but with no luck. I,ve learned a lot, but I am no closer to my goal of making the motherboard ready to accept the card. The computer is a Sony vaio, P-4 processor, and Intel® 845GV Extreme Graphics
64MB Shared Graphics Memory installed with the motherboard. Am I going to be able to install this graphics card, or am I stuck with the current configuration for the motherboard?
Thanks for your help! _________________ Richard Laakso |

Hmm... Unless there is some sort of pci to agp adapter i dont know about, i think you'll have to purchase a new motherboard before you are able to use that card. This similar problem once happened to me when i purchased my first apg card ever for my HP 1.2 celeron! Anyways its common for computers that were built by "generic" companies such as sony, HP, e-machines, etc... not to have an agp slot. They instead come with integrated intel "extreme"(apparently intel's definition of extreme = BIG CRAP) Another option is to return the radeon and get a PCI graphics card, I almost positive your mobo has a pci slot PNY technologies make some decent pci cards now, i think 5200's. Your best bet is to get a new mobo and install it yourself since the radeon r0x0rz. GOGO intel extreme integrated graphics! Goodluck doing whatever, i hope this helps _________________ Amd64 3200+ , Chaintech zenith NF3-250, Maxtor 80GB HDD, 1gb Corsair xms, Gainward golden sample 6800gt ,19" LCD , TT Butterfly PSU, Aspire X-superalien |

| even if you could install the 9600 i doubt the powersupply on the sony viao would be able to handle it... if you search the posts you'll see that there have been several attempts at upgrading a sony viao's video card, and all have ended in another case or motherboard or both. |

My other son has a sony vaio desktop, a previous version, and he was able to uprade the graphics card, because the agp graphics connector was attached to the mother board. Power is no problem. I will look into the PCI card, but I would prefer the AGP card. Is it really not possible to add the connector to the mother board? _________________ Richard Laakso |

No, it has it or it doesn't.
You will have to upgrade your motherboard or use a PCI graphics card. _________________ Owner & Administrator

It looks like I will have to get the FX 5200 card. Is this still the best PCI card on the market? How do I overclock it? Anyone interested in an unused and unopened ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card? _________________ Richard Laakso |

| I just looked at the mother board again. It is configured for an AGP card. The board actually says AGP where the configuration is located. It just doesn't have the pin connector attached to it. If I bought the pin connector and disabled the intel extreme graphics card, why wouldn't this work? |

You are not making any sense at all, is there any way you can post some pictures of your motherboard? One picture = 1 thousand words :) _________________ DiRoLoKo!! I fix robots and wear a bunny suit for a living.....the best job i ever had, most money i ever had :) |

Ok. I will take a close-up picture of it, and try to attach it to a post here. Once you see the picture you will know exactly what I am talking about. It will be tomorrow AM before I can do this. Thanks for all of your replies!!! _________________ Richard Laakso |

Well, I just realized that this thread is a little old, but I am having the same problem as rlaakso; however, I'm using a Compaq Presario.
Here's what the mother board looks like:
As you will see there are 3 PCI slots and just to the left of them and shifted up is where the AGP connector should be, but alas it's not there!!!
Anyway, I have spent a lot of time trying to find a place that could sell one of those stupid board-to-board connectors and I finally found one here: http://www.smp-tech.com/interconnect/ic_edge_connectors.htm.
I hope this works out for the both of us, but I don't know if it will 'cause I just barely found it. I'm contacting the company as we speak..... |
