I've read a lot of how-tos about cutting windows, but I'm curious what tips and techniques everyone who has experience with them has. I'm especially curious as to what tools everyone has used and what works the best.

Dremel with the circular saw (looks a lot like a drill bit) attachment.

what is your case made out of... cause it will be harder if it's steel.
i have a holesaw that's supposed to cut through metal, but my aOpen case put it in its place. i had to use my dremel and a crapload o' cutting disks.

Yeah...I have a steel case unfortunately as well. I use holesaws to cut through steel a lot thicker at work, so that won't be a problem for cutting a bigger fan hole.

I guess I'll have to spring for a dremel or try to find someone that will lend me one, as that seems to be the most popular way to cut windows.

What advice do you guys have for that method? I have never used a dremel before, so keep this in mind.

a hole saw, good idea.
another - jigsaw??? may work well if you want to experiment

for any case modding, a strong, steady hand is a good thing to have along with templates/patterns. be sure of what you are going to do b/c most of the time the 'damage' is irreversible.

when i did my panel (pics will come soon) i had used my dremel for the first time... the cutting discs will be the best bet but you have to know how to use them... You cant just go gun ho and cut the metal... that will snap these in two or chew them up really fast... i went through my 20 pk like nothing... i tried a new method with the 36pk and only used 5 to finish the piece which was more than 3/4's of what i had done with the other set. you need to SLOWLY eat away the metal from the surface by sliding the disc over the cut marks and thinning the metal til the disc cuts through on its own.,.. cant get more detailed than that but the method saved me lots as those bits cost a pretty penny after you go though them...

The tools and supplies that I would recommend for any case mod are: 1.) jigsaw 2.) fine tooth metal jigsaw blades 3.) electric drill 4.) several sharp drill bits 5.) two+ coarse files, one round, one flat.

Aftermarket automotive lights can be used for lighting mods, since they run on 12v. For windows plexiglass or similar product available at hardware stores, thinner than 3/32" and it'll likely crack, thicker than 1/8" and it'll be difficult to mount. The lights can be mounted easily using a double sided tape. Hope this is helpful or inspiring to somebody.
