Well, I sold my stock car so I have about $15,000 to play with.. although my wife would devorce me if I spent all of the that on a computer lol
So safe to say I am willing to spend PLENTY to get it to where it's "Show Competition" quality.
And able to load programs/games as fast as you can blink your eye. |

first step is research everything.
it's good to ask questions in forums like this and get opinions, but read tons of reviews. see what's out there and decide from there.
also, decide what you want your case to look like. there are a lot of choices, and what you go with with depend on what you plan to put into it.
so i could tell you to go with a Lian Li PC-75 server case cause i think it is godly, but if you only plan on use two 5.25 bays for a cd-rom and burner, then what would be the point. it would be overkill.
as for the mobo, decide on intel or amd first. there's always something new coming out... decide if you want to wait a month or so, or if you want this now. keeping in mind that there is always something newer and better coming out soon.
but research. that's my opinion. _________________ i'm the fool, he's the fanboy. together we are Fanboy and Fool... Tweaknews Reviewers |

The other question is do you mind buying power or do you want a custom built rig?
If you want a customized fast rig that's painted like your car, or laser cut windows, or other such things you have two options.
You can buy one from Alienware, or VoodooPCs, or Falcon Northwest, or ABS, or some similiar boutique seller...
Or you can spend the time and energy to do it yourself. There's bragging rights either way. It all depends what you want, how much frustration and time you have to spare. _________________ __________[(Crayola)]>_____________

How do you guys feel about the Xoxide Mega Cube case?
I know it's heavy and pricey which doesn't bother me but what are the other cons?
Other then it's SCREAMING for mods... |

If you're going for a beastly case... the aluminum version with windows... lol
Can't find it on Xoxide's site right now, but this other site is giving one away... today!

Hey, I am glad that I came across this thread, because - like you - I have been wondering about this same thing. I have a lot to spend, but I had decided to wait until next year before making any serious parts lists.
I was also considering the Mega Cube case, but DesignComp is only an hour from where I live. I plan to commission a completely custom-built case from them, so I'd like to know what components everyone might use.
The only two components I am pretty set on are the monitors, the samsung 240T and 241MP. |

Of course there's always the AMD vs Intel Camp. But either way, you first have to decide if u plan to overclock. This will make a diff to the CPU / RAM / cooling u will be getting. First off, overclockers get a low clockspeed CPU, ie P4 2.4C as well as DDR500 RAM in order to overclock to say 3GHz at 1:1. Cooling is unlikely to be the stock intel heatsink, but would be a swiftech / thermalright / etc.
If you dun want to overclock, evaluate your needs, currently a p4 2.8 / athlon 2800+ is pretty decent and does overclock a little as well.
You can try http://www.ocarena.com
there's some hardware info over there. |
