my desktops internet access has been much much slower than my laptop for a long time. both are connected to the same home network through wireless adapters. i thought that my desktop was full of problems and this was causing the slow transfers/lag on the internet.

i have just reformatted my system and installed windows 7. nothing else but drivers. however it is very slow.

downloading the same file from nvidia.com i get a consistent transfer rate of 140kB/s on the laptop and on the desktop i get a fluctuation of 4-30kB/s.
(however, while running a torrent at night, it does reach 140KB/s, so it is capable of getting to the full speed of my internet connection)

i tried something called vista anti-lag but it doesnt help either. i am thinking it must be the linksys card now.

im looking for new card and found a d-link 2320 model

it says i need a 32 bit pci slot. havent been able to find anywhere how to check if my mobo has a 32bit pci slot. how can i check if i can use this card?

i have a password required to get on the network. is that what you meant?

its very strange from the laptop its always fast and consistent, makes me think its not something affecting the network but just the computer

Check the setting in the device manager for the network card.

Make sure it is set to full duplex.

i went into the properties under the device manager, but could not fund where to check if its full duplex

tried to find some instructions on line, but couldnt follow those

Should be a place in the device manager where you can get into advanced properties.

Did you use the manufacturers driver or the one that came with the OS?

i used the manufacturers driver. this linksys cards drivers do not work on windows 7, so i found a solution online and used the chipsets maufacturers driver from Ralink.

windows also provided a driver that i tried but it was the same so i rolled it back to the Ralink

in windows 7 under the advanced tab, there is no option to change full/half duplex. i found some screenshots online for that setting in windows xp, but its not there in windows 7.

i tried the netstat command and saw that there is many errors (66000) in sending but no errors at all in recieving. seems like it could be the full/half duplex issue?

It was an issue I had with one computer. It was only allowing half of the bandwidth.

Linksys should have windows 7 drivers. They are owned by cisco now and 7 support should be there.

Well, in Windows 7, in Device Manager, you should see your wireless card in the network adapters submenu. Right click it, select properties, you should see a scrolling menu box on the left, look for Settings and Duplex. It should be set to "auto navigate". If there is nothing there that says duplex at all, then I have to wonder where you got your copy of Windows 7 in the first place.........

Several people got a RC1 copy to test that is good till June 2010. It is directly from Microsoft.

This thread is about his internet connectivity. Can we stay on topic and not about his OS source. It is not our business and makes him look like he did something wrong when all he did was ask our help.

That's exactly what I'm doing. If he didn't get his copy from a reliable source, it's very likely much of the networking was removed from the OS, which would explain his lack of settings. I have in in the RC, but quite a few settings were missing in previous betas. S'on topic.

fixed!

set it to "ad hoc" mode instead of infrastructure

country region 11a set to channels 52-64 instead of 36-64, 149-165
country region 11g set to channels 10-11 instead of 1-11

i went to the laptop wireless properties and noticed it was set to ad hoc

played with the channels until i found the best setting

even my laptop on xp doesnt have the duplex setting though
ive seen other people online asking about the same settings which are in my windows7, they also do not have the duplex setting

but there are LOADS of people complaining about this linksys card (all linksys products), i wont buy from them again, but at least i dont have to thow away this adapter.

Linksys has been the better brand lately when compared to the nightmare d-link routers out there.

Could be the windows 7 support which you can't blame the adapter for seeing it wasn't actually designed for the new OS.
