hi everyone,

i had this problem once YEARS ago on win 98, and i just formatted to solve it since i could upgrade to win xp. now i have just installed vista a few weeks ago and i dont want to format.

not sure what happened to cause this. now when i download any file from the internet (while downloading i open the folder and watch whats happening) the file appears for a second then dissapears. searching the system for that file doesnt do find it.

also i cannot install any programs at all.

heres the error message when i install avg

Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file miniavi.avg: creating file....
Error 0xe001042c
Warning: Action failed for file miniavi.avg: creating backup....
Error 0x80070020 %DESTINATION% = "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Avg\miniavi.avg.install_backup", %SOURCE% = "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Avg\miniavi.avg"
Error 0x80004004
Rollback:
Error: Action failed for file miniavi.avg: removing file....
Error 0x80070020 %PATH% = "C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Avg\miniavi.avg"

By the looks of it, it still thinks it is there.

Best to do a system restore back to a day where you were not having problems.

Also, if what Nate suggested doesn't work, get spybot search and destroy and do a full system scan. You might also want to install another free antivirus just to scan the system. You can remove it and reinstall avg once the system is clean.

You may need to download the apps on another machine and transfer the files on a flash disk, you should be able to get spybot to work from the flash disk itself if you copy the installed folder to the thumb drive or simply install the app to the thumb drive, it should work from there on any PC you connect it to. Search AVG rescue CD for a portable (does not require installation) version of AVG that you can run.

Nice. System restore is always a good fallback when things stop working right. I would suggest you scan for spyware and viruses now
