Hi again, thought I might make a thread of it to see if anyone could help...basically bought a new Gigabyte Motherboard, 1gb PC6400 Geil RAM and an Athlon X2 6000+...installed it all with no real problems but my pc boots for 5 seconds then shuts off! I've tried everything before posting...replacing and repasting the cpu...checked all connections, theyre fine, tested gfx card in a different pc, thats fine...i just cant seem to figure out what it might be! Any suggestions?
Thanks alot for any help! _________________ AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Gigabyte S series nForce550, 256mb GeForce 7800GTX, 1gb PC6400 Geil DDR2 150 & 80gig HDD, 650W PSU |

Oh also...I have a 650w Q-tec PSU...im thinking this COULD be the problem? I bought it when I didn't know q-tec were pure s***....so im thinking my new hardware isnt getting enough power as it actually isnt 650...more like 350? _________________ AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Gigabyte S series nForce550, 256mb GeForce 7800GTX, 1gb PC6400 Geil DDR2 150 & 80gig HDD, 650W PSU |

have you tried reinstalling your OS?
you may have had corruption due to overheating and when you fixed the HSF it remained corrupt.
Try a complete reformat and install and see if that sorts you out. _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

I have no OS installed on either of my new sata drives or my old IDE drive which had just my games and programs on.
Could the motherboard also be shorted by somehting? Like it touching the case? If so, is the whole thing going to be fried now? _________________ AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Gigabyte S series nForce550, 256mb GeForce 7800GTX, 1gb PC6400 Geil DDR2 150 & 80gig HDD, 650W PSU |

First of all, try booting with the bare minimum hardware (CPU, 1 Stick memory, vid card and HDD) Try all mem slots one at a time. Check your mem voltage, default settings of the mobo may be too low, try some value ram if you have access to some, then set Vdimm to the manufacturers recommendations. I always boot a board for the first time outside the case.
Good luck! |

Right, ive tested everything with bear minimum, tried a different PSU and to no avail...which leads me to one thing; the CPU. How can I test it to see if it is?
One thing, when i boot up, i can see the boot screen and it says the CPU is 'unkown' or 'unrecognised'...could this be the key to the problem? _________________ AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Gigabyte S series nForce550, 256mb GeForce 7800GTX, 1gb PC6400 Geil DDR2 150 & 80gig HDD, 650W PSU |

Its possible your bios doesn't support your CPU, see if you can find an older CPU to boot with and set up an OS. Then head to the motherboard manufacturer's website and download the latest BIOS update and upgrade your bios. Assuming the other CPU will boot.
Also make sure none of the pins are bent on the CPU and that its seated correctly in the socket. _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

Xal I think you're on to somehting there! It says on the gigabyte website that the first two bios versions of my mobo DONT support the 6000+! Which means...i need to try and get hold of a cheap am2 cpu....then ill be able to fix it. So that's why it says it's unrecognised...thanks alot for your help! _________________ AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+, Gigabyte S series nForce550, 256mb GeForce 7800GTX, 1gb PC6400 Geil DDR2 150 & 80gig HDD, 650W PSU |

See if you can find a kind trusting friend
Or you could take the mobo to a PC store and see if they will flash it for you. If you baught the stuff from a local shop then take it back to them and have them sort it out. _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock
