Although I agree Microsoft Office is overpriced for what it is, I just can't jump on the OpenOffice wagon. When I last used it (about 1yr ago) it wasn't up to par. I had numerous Word documents that I attempted to open with OpenOffice, only to have the formatting all messed up. I didn't have a reason to use any of the other programs, so I don't know how well they work. The word processor problems were enough to turn me away from this free product.

I understand where you're coming from. When originally tried OpenOffice about a year ago, I had the same problems and concerns as you did. This was before the 2.0 release, and now that the version is 2.0.4. there have been even more refinements and improvements since a year ago, particularly in the area of speed and compatibility with other document types.
I have used it to open Word documents, and I have used it to create Word documents (to be opened with Word at a later time) and with this newer version everything went flawlessly.

I tried it out as well and I am impressed to see how fast the program is.
Wish everything was open source though, enhancements get done so much faster.
What takes the big boys 2 years to get rolling the open source guys will do in 2 months and that is stretching it.

Yeah, and the bugs and solutions get pretty much solved like we're doing here: through discussion. It makes the process very educational for the end-user. It's awesome. |

Yeah, opensource is great. I'm working on an opensource game at the moment and its really nice to be able to ask a coder to put in X or Y feature and have it in a few days. Another bonus of opensource is the fact that its usually smaller than its comercial counterparts. MS office for example is probably about %40 antipiracy code and security to protect the actuall office code from hackers. With opensource none of that is neccessary, just the code you need to do the job, no more no less.

I'd be interested in that game, once it was fully developed. It's also nice to see a fellow Open Source advocate.
I wrote an article for Nathan in early Nov. on OpenOffice. Since that time, it's gone up to 2.1. Also, since that time, I've become more familiar with Open Source, and so now I'm actually reporting bugs and putting in suggestions in the OpenOffice forums. It's great. |
