No need to say agreed again so I'll move along to suggestions...
Do yourself a favor and build your own system You'll still have some cash left over and you will have a much better system than the same money could get from dell or any other brand.
I would buy your parts from newegg (great service and returns policy) and buy the best stuff you can for the money. With a higher budget I'm sure you'll see a bunch of new recomendations in this thread shortly :) _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

Xal, I'm flattered that you guys think I could do this, but I find myself needing this computer exactly at the same time I have to concentrate on the very business I'm getting it for. Dell is almost irresistable at this point, so now i need you guys to build me a Dell. LOL,,,
This is the last one I came up with, but I've revised it since this writing! I'll let you all guess what i've changed, Happy New Year, ZZZZZZZZ, more later, please suggest all,,
( What do you guys thinnk of XP Pro to the Home Edition? All suggestions welcome!)

I have also been told that AMD & PCI Express ae more of a direct connection / therefore faster etc,, And the same holds true for the Raedon as opposed to the "included with price" 256mb whatever, zzzzzzzzz you know,,, but more of a direct :drunken:zzz _________________ ♫ Josh Awards=+12 -5 =7 ~HaM=3~ Ж=3 ~Zero_Fresh=3~Burgundian Award=1~JW=4 ~ ˙ =1~Sean=1~Dene=3 ~Putale Kudos=1~GMoney=4~Sally Grommit Award=1~Bunni & Badger=2 Gold Stars ♫

That system looks good RS.
Stick to XP Pro, Home is junk.
Intel is better than AMD at the moment so stick to the 6600. Besides that, even if AMD PCIE is faster you don't play games and with that graphics card you wouldn't see a difference anyway Intel has a better dual core setup ATM and dual core is good for when you have multiple windows open and are working in a lot of different apps at the same time. _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

I prefer XP pro as well, but the home version is perfectly acceptable for most users. Pro has better networking and security features which appeal to the more network saavy user, and there is some scuttlebutt that MS my support Pro longer than Home, but who knows what MS will do?
I also agree with SOS that most Internet security software you're likely to find bundled with a new computer is less than desireable, for a number of reasons. It will be on the machine, but there's no law that says you have to use it. I have had good luck with AVG. It even protects the two computers my teenagers use. 'Nuff said.
Right now, Intel has the upper hand, and the AMD/ PCIE issue is really moot. You'll unlikely see any real-world performance differences without spending an insane ammount of money on your graphics system. |

Ahhh, you see, this is what I love about TN, all the opinions are varied yet tend to point in generally the same direction.
XP- Home has been a good thing for me, but I feel like since I have the $, I'd like to upgrade to Xp-pro, I probly don't Need it, but this puter will be with me for a LONG time, so I'm going to beef it up as much as I can at the beginning.
Mojo, that AVG program looks good and it it's good enough for your kids, it'll be great. I use Norton for lack of any info on something better.
SoSoy, what do you think of AVG? *sounds of what's left of brain cells rotating* Work? Well, I'm a rock star who recently was upgraded (downgraded, LOL) to an agent who books entertainers. Not sure if it's called work tho,
My plan is to get a super computer for my fun stuff, and wipe out my present Dell'sOS and use the old one for the business. You know, keeping track of whatever, contracts, etc. I'll get a fax machine too, and work with my affiliate about 30 miles away. This is why I thought about Pro, so if I need to network in the future, I can.. It may or may not be necessary, but I like to have the option. And who knows, I might just turn into a gamer someday too, so want to have a beefy vid card & fast processor.
Here's what my friend wrote today about Shuttles, it seems he's a real fan of them. I didn't mention TN, so he doesn't read your comments.. ( in other words, feel free to be brutally honest, since there'll be no feelings hurt.) Sorry about the url's, it won't let me insert them without alot of work, and it's New year's day
From my buddy:

Hey You,
Here's one possibility - dual layer/core FX series AMD processor with one Gig of RAM, DVD burner, SATA 2 200 GB hard drive, WIN XP MediaCenter Edition (this matters - and it's not much more), and the esteemed nVidia GPU with 256 Megs of dual channel RAM. This system would bury the dell without effort, and run much quieter as well - this is the Shuttle case with the super nice hard anodized, brushed aluminum face - has a really solid feel about it, much like the audio stuff we're used to :0)

In all with everything shipped, this would be about $1250 - give or take a bit... Some of it could be cranked back a notch or two - to save a little cash, but it's all really nice gear. you'd pretty much have to step into the 3 to 5 thousand dollar range to out-do this machine - pretty much the best there is without going totally nuts, like the 1000 dollar and more video cards - laughs. Of course there are some price breaks and other things with the factories, like Dell - but you always loose on one or two critical points with them in ways that cannot be altered with their product. Also, you're getting a stronger GPU (Vid-Card), and TWICE the RAM, just to begin with on this one. A wide screen monitor, and with the TV I/O unit, your monitor will act as a TV :0) - saving you that next investment regarding the combined use. Let me know if you want a few more ideas, and look around at this Direcron site, they've got some really great prices on the very best gear. You would likely spend about $1700 at Dell to match this machine, and still lose on some of the details and qualities - not to mention the superb look and feel of this equipment... It would be possible to drop 2 or 3 hundred bucks from the bottom line, cutting the RAM in half, smaller HD, etc - but in my opinion, it would be best to load it now (in the package deal) as it is cheaper than getting more later.
Hope this helps you just get a feel for doing it the other way around. It's still a much better deal, this way rather than the package deal from the factory...

Ok, this is the Dimension 9200 without monitor or virus protection pkg. but beefed up HD & memory - on the phone my friend mentioned that the
256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache [Included in Price]
is a better faster card than the
256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro [add $50]
Dell Recommended for an enhanced Windows Vista experience

The x1300 is a faster card than the 7300LE turbo cache. Turbo cache = crap
It means the card can share your system RAM instead of having sufficient ram of its own. Also the LE denotes a crippled version of the 7300 chipset. Go with the 1300 pro, or better yet see if they have a higher spec card in your price range _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

Haha Xal, I gotta keep it under 1500. I did wonder about the turbocache.. Thanks!
Here's the update:
(the reason I ordered the floppy drive is so I can change it out later if I feel like it, I might harvest one from my 8200.

oops, forgot to post that latest price: $1,493.
The sales guy said his supervisor will work it so tax is included.
Y'know what's weird, he said I can't buy the 9200 without a Tax ID # (which I have thru the company) but I still don't understand this...???
Here's what he wrote:
Hello (Rock),
I read over your e-mail. Unfortunately I cannot sell you the dimension 9200 it is a business computer that can only go through the business side. Do you have a tax ID number? You have to have one in order to purchase a business computer. Let me know what you would like to do!

I know I'm driving everybody nuts,,, I found this review on the Dell 2007WFP monitor: There's a refurbished one at Dell, probably the old model he mentions that had banding problems:
From a CNet review on the Dell 2007WFP:
Pros:
Great design, color, contrast, price.
Cons:
Banding fiasco :)
Full user opinion
After researching monitors for the better part of a month, I ended up going with the Dell 2007WFP. In terms of price, quality, warranty, etc, it was by far the best deal. I actually purchased two which sit on my desk and provide a wonderful panaromic view. I would give it a 10 if it wasn't for the aggravation of...
The Banding Problem. It's definitely there when you're hooked up in DVI, although it's something you have to look for, not necessarily a glaring problem under most circumstances. Hooked up in VGA (which I am) it goes away completely. I knew about this issue when I bought the monitors hoping they would ship me "fixed" models but knowing I could replace them if they didn't. Unfortunately, they sent me "banding" versions and I am in the process of having them replaced. Luckily, I get to keep the current ones until the replacements arrive, and in VGA mode, I am perfectly content. I am a little ticked off at Dell for shipping older models knowing that the vast majority of consumers won't notice the difference.
Overall, I would highly recommend this monitor in spite of the "issue". If you get a model A00 (check the serial on the back) go straight to the Dell forum and request a replacement from ChrisM the moderator. Aside from this minor pain in the butt, you're getting a top notch product. _________________ ♫ Josh Awards=+12 -5 =7 ~HaM=3~ Ж=3 ~Zero_Fresh=3~Burgundian Award=1~JW=4 ~ ˙ =1~Sean=1~Dene=3 ~Putale Kudos=1~GMoney=4~Sally Grommit Award=1~Bunni & Badger=2 Gold Stars ♫

that last one you configured is going to be very good, only thing is, I heard the DDR 533 is better for price\ performance increase with the Core 2's (since they support 1066, its in 1\2 ratio). Can anyone confirm? And also, video playback quality is better than the NVidia (read on tomshardware)
You will be amazed with the X-FI... I was and I too had my onboard connected to a powerful stereo system, you get much better quality, and sharper highs, and punchier bass. _________________ P4 3.2ghz

DDR533? DDR2-4200 versus the DDR2-5400....Well....that brings up a VERYsorry Xal important consideration.
What chipset? The chipset decision is as important as the CPU decision.
Is it still an ATI as discussed earlier in the thread? Or has that changed? _________________ .

Can anyone confirm? And also, video playback quality is better than the NVidia (read on tomshardware)
You will be amazed with the X-FI... I was and I too had my onboard connected to a powerful stereo system, you get much better quality, and sharper highs, and punchier bass. |
Well, since the processor is quad pumped (266x4=~1066) and the memory is DDR, the 533mhz ram will also be running at 1066, no? As in 1:1? I guess I don't see what you're driving at. |

what Im trying to say is DDR2 533 would better fit the conroe at stock speeds since your not OC'ing... (533 X 2 = 1066 which is conroe FSB) I dont think you need the 667... but Im not sure...
hehe I meant DDR2 2o2c... _________________ P4 3.2ghz

Faster RAM with an Intel proc isn't gonna hurt or help, except in OC situations. For the small price difference, go ahead and get the faster RAM. It'll help free up a typical bottleneck in your new system. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

The Dark side, Xal? I've been in the dark a long time, trying to see the light these days!
I decided to get a better monitor later and put the $ into the system,, also will use my old 100wat speakers for now, since I can always flip the switch on the big amp etc. if I want the place to rumble. I have to save a bit for other stuff I need right now anyway, and my mom is doing some OC ing herself regarding the $700. so I have $2100. to play with.. This config is $1782.. I need to get that AVG program too,,
(Mojo, do your kids have the free AVG version or ....?)
The sale ends tonight, so look at this one and tell me what you guys think please: All suggestions welcome! The monitor is a question too, what's best?

Thanks SoS! And thanks to all you guys for assisting me with this decision, it's a big purchase for me, and hopefully will last a long time before I'll need to buy another one.
I'm going to beef up the case & memory & hardrive & everything I can, balancing them out as much as possible.
Update: Last night I tried to order the Dimension 9200, but the credit dept. was closed.. I was already approved for a loan in the HOME dept, but not the Biz... YET..
So today, I called back, and they said I'm on another Dell account with my info, and they have to check & verify I'm the same person!
I explained that I was all set to get the XPS 410, when the guy said the ones with XPPro started at a much higher price, and he was in the home dept, & couldn't sell me one anyway, plus I'd need a tax ID #, blah blah blah,
So they'll call me back later today to see if I qualify for a Dell small business loan. Wait wait wait wait ....
The good news is, if I don't get the biz account, I can still get the home sytstem, and upgrade to XP-pro myself,
OR if I do qualify, they say I get even better deal, and can add more goodies,,,
So I wait. .... here's what I want, IF I get a bigger biz loan::
(Mojo, I decided to go with the Norton, since it'll save my cash.. but when it runs out, will definitely go to AVG..)
(at risk of repeating myself, I did make a couple changes:)

Oh shizzzzzzzzzle. Dell will finance a home system, but NOT the biz zp-pro system.
(XPS 710) and 9200)
It'll cost over $3k in a home sys (X to get close to what I had in the pro, and the home is missing my EEEE firewire adapter for the DVR-DVD vid cam connection.
I'd have to lose the fax-modem or the Fxi sound card. It was fine on the 9200. The only plus with the home XPS set-up is I get a TV tuner thing for $85. extra.
$the 1300 cash is almost enough to get what I need on the 9200, I need at least $1500. worth of stuff - that doesn't include a monitor or speakers. Mom'll do it for me, lol...
Finally, a decision! Pay cash & add on to it later,,,
