I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I did it the old fashioned way, I started to review items I had purchased and had an idea as to the way I wanted to write. So I submitted a review to a site and they posted it.

My idea was to write reviews without all the mumbo jumbo of technical jargon and instead write reviews that the average person could understand and at the same time get the information they needed to make an educated purchase.

Being an Industrial Engineer by trade, I could wrtite techical reviews, but I thought tooo many people were alread doing that, so I wrote according to the old adage "keep it simple stupid".

Along those lines, I was the first to review heatsinks in a closed case environment. Why?? Because that is how most people run there machines. One thing led to another and companies started sending me stuff to review.

I had a simple rule, If I review it I keep it, no exceptions. If I don't review an item, I would ask the company sending the item what they wanted me to do with it, send it back or donate the item.

I usually did high-end type products, the best cases, mostly aluminum, and high performance heatsinks.

If I ended up as a consultant for a company, I stopped reviewing their products, rather than cause a conflict of interest.

I know this has been long winded, but you asked!!

Thats not long winded, it was a good explanation on how you came up in the tech world. Gives me some good ideas to get off to a good start when I can get the time to review hardware and etc. Highschool life is busy, and college even busier, so after that I will try to get myself started.

No company will give you any profucts until you are established so reviewing your own hardware is the best way to start.

Most companies do not give out to freelance writers.

And after reviewing stuff for a while you will lose interest even if it is free.

You won't lose all interest, but you have to work for that "free" stuff.

Oh, how true, free stuff can be a two-edged sword!! After maybe two hundred reviews, something really has to get my interest UP!

I buy stuff that may be interesting, but most of the time I'm disappointed, like I was with the Zalman Fatal1ty case (

Not to mention the fact that a lot of what you get sent is dead boring. In 10 - 15 reviews you'll be lucky if you get one thing worth being excited about. Even once you establish yourself and can get the more expensive products you soon get bored of reviewing 20 variations of a geforce 4 mx 440 (example). Reviewing is work and like all work its great and exciting when you start but gets boring over time. I enjoy it, now, but as to how I will feel in two or three years who can say.

In other words you have to really work to get the good stuff and I think you'll find it easier just to buy what you want

If however you actually like the idea of reviewing itself then by all means get to it and have fun

Only the pros get the really nice kit, have a look at all the reviews on stuff you would like and see how long the reviewers have been arround.
