Ok, I'm paying for the best internet I can which is 8mb from Comcast. I've got a router which is hooked up to three computers. Even if all of us were using the line all at once, it should be able to support all of us, but most of the time it won't. I play BF2 online and it gets really annoying when I join a game and have like 800 ping when I should have only 30-70. Nothing else is running on my machine, just BF2 and most of the time my roomates aren't doing much.

The question I have, is this just what happens with all broadband internet service? You *CAN* have amazing speeds, but never consistently. It's getting pretty old especially since we are paying for what should be the best, and getting crap a lot of the time. Makes me miss dial-up in a way. It may have been slow, but it was always consistent...

Oh yeah, another question was do you think there are some ports closed on the router that could be limiting BF2? Or any games for that matter? I don't think there is since it runs pretty smooth some of the time, but I don't know a whole lot about routers yet.

You've probably got a few different things going on.

First off, it's 8mbs MAX, on a single machine. If you have four machines running bandwidth-intensive stuff at the same time, you're getting a max 2mbs. I believe your upload on Comcast is only 768kbs, so divide that by four as well..........just as an example.

Also remember that cable broadband is a "shared" connection........the more nodes on your line, the slower your performance will be. If you're in a highly poplulated area, like a big subdivision, with alot of people on Comcast ISP, your speeds won't come near 8mbs. I used to get max speeds on Optimum, but I was literally the ONLY cable ISP subscriber on my cable node. Out in the sticks, sortof.

One thing you can do to help is to either get a router that supports QoS packeting, or see if your current router does. QoS can be set to allow priority to certain apps/machines, so if yours is the primary gaming machine (lots of small packets), and the others are primarily streaming music or video (large packets), you can set it so your machine gets priority.

I have 5 mg dsl which is supposed to be 5 mg down and 900k up

My download speed is spot on but my upload blows. But yea as fussnfeathers said you have to share you bandwith on cable so you may only peak at certin times of the day.

*** Note*** One more thing is, i am using a d-link router and was kinda experiencing the same thing with fluxuating pings and stuff. I went into my router and did a Firmware update. The update fixed a xbox live issue and a packetloss issue with sp2 or something like that. But after the update it didn't fluxuate much at all. Give it a try

yeah i have comcasts 6mbps/384 package, max download speed i see is barely 5mbps, but my upload is always right on the nose, and even 1 computer using mild internet resources will cut your bandwidth in half ive noticed.

Thanks for all the posts guys.

My router does have QoS and I'll mess around with it some, even though my problem is just when to many people are on. From Speakeasy my Dl was about 7mb and upload was 350kb. I might check with Comcast and see if we can get faster upload speeds, but we already have 8mb so I would think we would have the fastest upload as well. Oh and I was going to try and update my firmware, but Linksys site is down.
