Sorry, It's been along time since I've posted. Been very busy at my new job.

Well anyway, I'm here to show off a little project I finished last week. I built a digital picture frame with my old gateway solo that was just collecting dust in my closet.

Specs:
Pentium II 233
192 Meg Ram
8 gig HD
Wireless 54G

For this project I wanted it to have as few cords as possible, so I installed a wireless G PC card. The harddrive as you can tell is mighty small, and after you install windows XP your left with 3.6 gigs left. So, to fix this delimma I have my picture frame wirelessly connect to a networked shared picture drop folder that my rommate and myself share. This way when we download new pictures from either digital camera they are placed in the same folder and then in-turn are displayed on the picture frame. Ok I'll stop talking and get to the pictures.

Here is the old laptop taking up space.

This is the point were I detached the old lcd from the case of the laptop. The tricky part is cutting into the plastic to extend the cords without damaging the lcd. I secured it to the frame with hot glue.

Now, I had taken apart some of the body of the laptop in order to plug back in my lcd.

In order for the body of the laptop to stay on the back I had to use some heavy duty mounting tape. Since I decided I was not going to mount in on the wall. (the old laptop weighs 10lbs!) I opted instead to make a stand out of the left over parts and some hot glue.

And 8 hours later we have the finished project!!

This was alot of fun to make, and if you have and old laptop just lying around you could make one too. Material cost was only $16 minus the laptop.

You are one sick dude.

Don't put that close to the window, that hot glue won't last. Keep an eye on the heat for that matter...don't want a "melt down".

yeah thats what i was thinking too.....theres gotta be a way to take all the components out of the casing and reorganize it into some kind of discreet backing....maybe even make it a bit thinner.....

then you could just set it up with VNC, and not worry about the keyboard or any of that jazz....

I've been thinking of doing that for my parents house and installing XP pro so that I can remote desktop to it and change the pictures. I live about 800 miles away from them so it would be an easy way for me to put new pictures on there.

FYI - I've noticed that university surplus' have been getting laptops in and they are usually < $50 for anyone that need a cheap laptop.
