Windows was acting really messed up a couple days ago after I restarted it. It wouldn't load at all, then it would load, then it wouldn't load again. So I was just going to repair it but I guess I missed the option to repair and just installed Windows again. Now everything works fine, but I have 2 copies of XP now. So how would I go about deleting one of them?

I had this problem before. Open the boot.ini (make a backup first) and delete one of the lines that looks like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional"

TH helped me with this before so he might have more of a detailed process.

this will point your boot to the proper install.

Just deleting the old folder SHOULD work.....but your drivers may ALL be pointed to the old folder too....so you may lose ALL of that stuff. Games saves, temp files, blah blah.

As long as you have your software and drivers.....you should be able to just delete the old folder, and if something doesnt work...reinstall it.

...word to the wise....copy the old directory completely...and make a backup of it. You know what murphy does when you dont take all precautions...=D

Forces you into the real fix, a fresh install?

Haha the real fix isn't a fresh install. The *REAL* fix would be a HDD that doesn't tell me a "Failure is imminent". But as long as this one doesn't completely die on me, meh

Thanks for the help guys, I'll try it out soon.

I have 2 Windows folders now. One is Windows, the other is Windows.0. I guess your talking about deleting one of these correct?

Oh and I'm keeping my old install of Windows since it's not messing up anymore. For some reason the new install made the old one work as well

then yes...just delete that folder.....i dont believe anything migrates fully to the second install, it just gets rewritten to the new folder.

...at least....on a Mac its all in one folder and we would have been done with this already......;D

Ok well I deleted a Windows folder and it still asks me what OS to boot into at startup. Do I need to do the boot.ini fix that soyo mentioned?

yes....when you installed that second copy...it wrote to the boot.ini...which gives you that option.

MAKE A BACKUP!!!!

find which line is assoc which which install...one should be named differently. Delete the line thats named differently. Save. Reboot to check...=]

I know this is a pretty bad quesion, but where is the boot.ini? All I could find was boot.ini.backup, unless that's it.

System properies >> Advanced >> Startup and recovery and then press button "Edit". This is the way right to the boot.ini

Quote:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS.0
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS.0="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

There's what it says. I'm guessing I need to delete the WINDOWS.0 one since I assume the original would just say WINDOWS.

But anyways, what would happen if the boot.ini got messed up? How would I get to windows to use the backup I made? I'm not worried about it, just seems like something I should know how to do.

Yeah, the top entry is the one you need to delete.

If you're nervous about editing, you can simply set the timeout to 0, and you'll never see the OS choice menu again.

Nah, I'm not worried about it. I always make sure I'm 99% sure what I'm doing is correct before I do it. I got it all worked out and it's booting up properly now.

But anyways, what would you have to do if the boot.ini got messed up?
