So I just set up a new SATA drive on my machine, because my old drive is close to being dead. Since it was my OS drive, I installed a fresh OS on this new drive. I go to do the windowsupdate and get this error:
[Error number: 0x800A0046]
Please change your Internet Explorer security settings
To save changes to your settings for this website, you need to enable userdata persistence for Internet Explorer. Complete the steps below, and then click Change settings to the left and try saving your changes again.
1. In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2. Click the Security tab, click the Internet security zone icon, and then click Custom Level.
3. In the Settings dialog box, scroll to the Miscellaneous section.
4. Under Userdata persistence , select Enable.
5. Click OK and when the security warning dialog box appears, click Yes.
Read more about steps you can take to resolve this problem (error number 0x800A0046) yourself.
I installed service pack 2, and the .Net framework and got the same error (I also did what it recommended… even setting the security to low on top of what they recommended)
Still didn’t work
I searched 0x800A0046 on the net and got a few sites that suggested what to do, but that didn’t work either.
One of the sites suggested that I type this into a command prompt: sc sdset wuauserv D A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)
They said I should expect “success”, but instead I got:
[SC] OpenService FAILED 5: Access is denied
I also tried everything on JUST the Administrator account.. and got the exact same results.
From my feeble grasp of the situation.. it seems that none of my accounts (neither myself nor my Administrator account) have the appropriate privileges.
Ever hear of anything like this or how to fix it?? _________________ 91K SIGNATURE IS NOT ALLOWED.

I did check microsoft.. the site that had the suggestions basically copy & pasted everything from microsoft.
I just bit the bullet and reformatted again :/.
Now things work. _________________ 91K SIGNATURE IS NOT ALLOWED.
