Hey guys I bought a new 250 GB WD 16 MB Cache SATA hard drive the other day and installed it today. I don't know why but my computer is not recognizing it. When I go into My Computer it's not showing it in there so I can format it. Is there something I need to do? I'm using an ABIT IC-7 MAX 3 mobo.
Thanks

chances are, if you have no other SATA drives, you need to enable your SATA controller in the bios. Should be in the integrated peripherals section.

That's the problem I had a RAID 0 with two SATA drives (raptors) on SATA 1 and SATA 2. I am trying to use this drive on SATA 3 . I have already enabled the SATA in the bios. both SATA 1 and 2, and SATA 3-6. I checked the power supply to the drive already, but I guess I may have to check it again, because that's all there is to it, right?

I had two 36GB raptors in RAID 0 and 1 80 GB IDE HDD. IC-7 mAX3 mobo w/ 1 GB memory.
I installed the new SATA drive on the 3rd SATA channel. there are 6 SATA channels in all. 2 on the southbridge and 4 on the board

Make sure your BIOS is set to Enhanced Mode for SATA. Then, in the Onboard PCI Device menu in your BIOS, make sure Serial ATA Controller is enabled......this is the setting to turn on or off the 4-channel Silicon Image SATA chip.

You will also have needed to install the Silicon Image SATA RAID driver off of your driver CD for the mobo, otherwise SATA ports 3-6 will not function in Windows.

I already have the SATA set to enhanced mode. Right under it though, you have to set the mode. I have it set for "RAID" to run my RAID 0 array.
SATA in enables in onboard PCI device. I got t\hat it runs the 4 channels from the manual. It was enabled already.

I installed RAID drivers when I pushed F6 during the windows install. Is that the same driver? Or is the one on the disc a different one. Actually the ones I installed during the windows install are from the intel website and they are for the southbridge. So there is a separate driver for the last 4 independent SATA channels?

Yes im sure there is. Both northbridge and south bridge SATA controllers have different drivers.

A northbridge SATA controller? dontknow

NEway... your SATA 1 and 2 are Intel matrix RAID (Ich5) on the southbridge. The other 4 SATA are a Silicon image PCI controller. They are like a PCI plug in card, but on the board. They must be turned on in BIOS in the onboard devices section, and drivers must be loaded for Windows.

Ok so I ran the low level format in the raid screen at boot up after I installed the drivers. The SATA RAID software for channels 3-6 recognize the drive, but it still doesn't show up in My Computer. What gives?

Well...you did a low level format. Which is extremely rare to need now days.
So now you need to setup the drive partition(s) and do a high level (regular) format, so you can use the drive.
You can do this from Windows disk management, or use third party software such as volume manager or WD's tools.

Right click "My Computer", select "manage", and it's in that list. Right clicking is used quite a bit in there.
