because the triangles aren't congruent. check the slope of the "hypotonuse" of all three triangles. you get 2/5, 3/8, and for the big "triangle" it would be 5/13. we'er assuming right angles, so the big "triangle" is a quadralateral, because the two smaller triangles don't have the same angle measures.

illustrated:

god bless trig...

and to think, our clas had to spend 3 weeks learning to do this. even though "we" learned it last year.

well 2y... if you were to use the pythagorean theorem a^2 +b^2=C^2... each triangle is congruent to each other, and it you find the area of each shape, that is congruent... You can also find the tangent, cosign, and sign of each using the sides, the angles of the triangle are congruent... so where does the whole come from? because you switch the red and green triangles, to keep the same form, the grren and yellow boxes are pushed down, causing them to not fit correctly... (I'm taking geometry honors, but I suck at it so correct me if Im wrong)

I have seen this before and it irritated me then too

Anyone feel like figuring out the areas of each shape and then comparing the total areas of each construct? I can't be bothered

uhhhh yeah. not congruent similar but i knowwhat you mean, and they're not.

first of all, i used co-tangents to find the angles, tan^-1 2/5=21.801, tan^-1 3/8=20.556, use the "no choice" theorem to find the other angles.
OMFG i'm an idiot.. i need to change that piccy (i did this at like 4AM) the other angles should be: (green triangle) 68.199° (red triangle) 69.444°. anyway, the point is that they're not similar by AAA.

also, for ratios of the sides, 2/3, 5/8, and 29^(1/2)/79^(1/2) are obviosly not equal, thus they are not similar by SSS.

Idk what material is included in your geometry classes, but you should know how to do that. i do understand your brain turning off over summer

or it could be MY mind that's turned off. (Ö would say it was never on...)

i'll re-do that image so that it's right. i'll include side lengths so you can understand better if you're having trouble

i did last night. the red triangle=12, green triangle=5, orange thing=7, lime green thing=8. 12+5+7+8=32
if the top triange were a real triangle, it would be 32.5
if the bottom were a real triangle were an actual triangle with a square hole in it, it'd be 31.5

i hate to double post (Nathan if you could merge my posts that'd be great. too lazy to re-do my quotes and smilies)

SoS, take the slopes of each of the hypotenuses. red triangle=3/8 green triangle=2/5. close but no cigar. there's an extra vertex where these two lines meet. pick's theorem (a really cool theorem that i found while looking for another theorem i was going to use instead... wiki here)

says that the area of the top quadralateral is 23+20/2-1 = 32

and that the bottom quadralateral (if the hole was filled) (look closely and count your points) is 24+20/2-1 = 33

there's your hole.

Thats what I thought I never did all that well at math but Physics, that was my favorite and rule one, matter can not be created or destroyed, just displaced Common sense really Actually I first saw a similar pic in an IQ test I took a few years back.

it can't be created or destroyed, but it can be converted into energy. what's to say i didn't just make tht up and the real answer is "it exploded" ?

but it does pose the question: if zero devided by anything is zero, any number over itself is one, and you can't divide by zero, what's zero devided by zero?

zero divided by zero equals a peanut butter sandwich. Because ice cream doesn't have bomes, of course.

ok, i had an idea.
set 0/0 equal to x, x=0/0
then multiply both sides by 0, you get 0x=0.
so x=all real numbers, because any number multiplied by 0 is equal to zero.

actually....its one of our own forum members names....

null set

since zero is actually an integer, but only represents the absence of of any logical denomination, its like trying to have a vampire bite a unicorn.....
