I recently reformated my friends dell laptop due to viruses, adware, and XP home... I successfully installed XP pro, only home still shows up in the OS choice at startup. I did a COMPLETE format of the hdd so I dont know why its still coming up... do I have to delete the mbr?

no just edit the boot.ini

In the C: directory....show all hidden files, and all system files, and unhide protected operating system files. This is all done through folder options.

In there you will see boot.ini. Copy it, and make a back up!!!!!!!!!!!

Then open it in Notepad and you will see somthing like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home"


The two lines in italics, might be reversed on yours......but you get the point.

Delete this whole line:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home"

Save the file....and reboot. That should work.[/b]
