well, its almost time for every computer enthusiests hated season... Summer... Summer means hotter temperatures, cooling problems, and of course, the dreaded heat shut down. To prepare for this season, I would like to list some things you should do or have.

1. Make sure your case is well ventilated, rearrange wires to give your case more airflow, and move it to an area of open circulation.

2. Check your CPU heatsink and fan. Clean any dust and debris from the heatsink, and listen for any signes of a failing fan, fixing this now will save you time and money once summer actually hits.

3. Check for any failing case fans and replace as necessary... remember you should have more intakes for cool air than exhaust fans.

4. Clean dust from case. The dust will disrupt dissipation of heat. For maximum heat dispersion, all dust should be removed from fans, hdds, heatsinks, and any dust laying on or behind devices.

5. If you are like me and dont have airconditioning, you may even want to invest in some kind of venting system to blow hot air out a window, or add more fans to your case to ensure proper cooling.

6. In case of extreme heat, have a small box fan. These can be useful when heat is so extreme, even with the proper venting and airflow it still overheats. Remove the side panel and place the fan near the side of the computer. Dont put it too close, you may get some interference with the sound or video.

7. Finally, a step which many people have already done, invest in watercooling, or aftermarket CPU cooling to bring those temps down even further...

if anyone has corrections or something to add drop it here

So why don't you have air conditioning? Confused

Can't you just get a small window unit for your room? They're really cheap at Home Depot

When it's 90 and muggy in Chicago, like it is this weekend, I can't imagine being without air conditioning.

While you need plenty of intake air....you will want more exhaust fans than intake fans, typically.
I think this is what you meant.

A timely bit of advise. Here in Phoenix, we've already seen several days over 100F, and it's not even June 1st.

I just cleaned my machine a couple of days ago. Also installed the AC unit that day and FINALLY fixed my northbridge fan. (Had been broken for a few months and I was too lazy to fix it). During cleaning, discovered that my video card fan was not blowing either, so that has now been fixed. Its been a couple of days and AC has cooled the entire room, the temps on the machine look great.

No AC here, but it's Vermont..........who needs it. (actually, i's 85 in my house right now)

CPU is running at 40C idle right now, it'll spike at 50c or so when I start gaming..........but I'm switching cases and PSU's this week, so we'll see what happens to the temps.

Today it went to 110 F it's still like 100 @ 10 PM

Air conditioning just has to work its ass off on days like these.

Aint that the truth. We have had to shut down all but a few machines just so the A/C isn't running all the time. Heck even last month, our electric bill was a little over $400 Shock And now it seems to be a little cooler in the loft area and quieter too

Stupid summer.
