I would try memtest86 to find a fault in your memory.

Also remove the side of your case and see if a cooler environment will lead to a good install.

Sounds like a hardware failure to me.

1) it passed memtest 86, 2passes with no errors. so i guess i wont replace the ram?

2) i havent cleaned the optical drive yet, but based on what i said before do u think its not the optical drive?

3) the cpu was an AMD PIB, when i was building the comp i touched the paste on the bottom of the heatsink, very little came onto my finger but do u think that would cause the problem and make the cpu overheat?

4) if its not that then the last things i could think of r the HD (cuz it said disk is damaged) or maybe the mobo and i have to disable the cache and stuff like they said above

If I had to put money on your problem, I would say it's the motherboard that's bad. I had the exact same issue a few months back. XP would start to load files, and "fail to load" a file somewhere around 50% or so. It eventually did load and install, but it was very unstable...........sound familiar? When I went to switch the mobo back to the old one, the CPU socket had actually fused closed, and broke when I tried to remove the CPU.........had to pry it out verrrrrrrry carefully with a screwdriver. RMA'd the board with Chaintech, new board worked beautifully.

At any rate, you've got a hardware problem, and I'd be willing to bet it's the motherboard. I would exchange that, before the hard drive or CPU.

i have a 10 day replacement policy with the store, ill see if i can exchange both the hard drive and mobo

problem solved?
i took it to the store, it installed windows twice (really fast) no problems.
so i looked like a goon, anyway i brought it back here, and i did it exactly how he did at the store.

i unplugged my usb KB and mouse and plugged in my old ps2 KB and mouse. and for my 80GB drive i was making 1 partition for 10GB for C, and the rest was a D drive. he just did a C partition only, and installed so i did that too. now it installed fast and is running smooth.

while i was there i spent $14 and traded the Markvision ram for kingston.
he said my 350W psu that came with the ANtec1650 case is not enough and could have been causing the problem, should i upgrade it?

anyway my question now is how do i get the rest of the 70GB on the drive to be drive D. if i enter windows setup it will format the D partition after i create it, but then it will start installing windows to the D drive immediately after it finishes formatting.

ok use an old win 98 boot disk and use fdisk in the command prompt... then follow the instructions to create and format the partitions (you can always change the format in computer management in windows when you install too)

aaahhhh!

everything was going good, and then as i started to install more and more programs, the comp got less and less stable: usually hanging at the boot screen that shows ur drives and PCI devices (master and slave, etc)

i usually have to press the reset button and then it loads. im thinking the new programs put more strain on the psu at start up.

is this psu related? do i need more than 350W?
or is it the mobo?

and when it does load windows it runs fast and smooth

well, then it sounds like heat problems, If I was you, I would first ordaer a larger PSU, to take strain off it, which will decrease the heat, and let us know what the temps are in your box and CPU, maybe try booting with the side off and see how that works.

got a 480W psu. doesnt hang on that screen that shows ur devices anymore. occasionally it will hang oon the windows boot screen, but its not that often, maybe if i reinstall windows using the new psu?

last problem seems to be with the usb ports, they were causing me problems when i used the usb kb and mouse. now the only programs that give me problems are morpheus and bitcomet, which use the usb ports (internet is through usb). and the system wont recognize them as high speed usb. im trying to find usb 2.0 drivers.

could that be mobo failure?
