Hi all,

I just spend the whole day installing my OS (WINXP). Since evrery installation takes too long time (updateting, softwares, ...), I think it is a good idea to make an exact copy (clone ) of the original drive.

I tried to use the Data Lifeguared Tools of Western Digital (my hdd are theirs) to do this. I chosed option copy C: (my first hdd) to D: (my second). It seems that what I got is a hdd containing two winXP OS's because at boot up it askes me to choose the OS I want . I just do not like this.

If there is a way to clone exactly my original hdd, please share your knowledge .

Thank you very much

If you mean copy exactly just the data on the drive, a RAID setup wouldn't be a bad idea. I think it's RAID 0 that makes a complete mirror copy of your drive.

RAID 1 is the mirror setup. RAID 0 splits the data between two drives, treating them as one.

I want to have a exact copy of my OS so that if it is crashed, I will not need to spend the whole day to reinstall everything.

Can you please explain what RAID0, RAID1 are?

Try CasperXp too....its free to try....but has all the features you need to ghost a drive....i used it at work to setup 9 identical machines....

RAID1 and 0 are not back up techniques really...they are running methods.

With Raid 0 and 1, you have two identical HDDs on your machine acting as one. You will see only one drive and will have one size limit.
With RAID 0, your data is split between the two drives, or striping, for increased read and write speed...but if the RAID array fails, your data is gone.
With RAID 1, the two drives still act as one, but instead of splitting the data, it copies it to both drives at the same time....called Mirroring....this is for better fault tolerance...performance is roughly the same as a normal IDE setup, but if one drive fails, the other contains your datat still....

Personally, I'm not a fan of "imaging to removable optical media", no matter who makes it.... slow and too many coasters.

However, Acronis True Image and Casper XP 3.0, are excellent. Both offer a full-feature free trial. You can download a copy of Acronis from Newegg for $29.99.

Thank you both of you. I checked on download.com and the reviews for Acronis True Image are very good, I will try casperXP too

I meant to say, "excellent for HD cloning", of course.

Final report :)

It turned out I do not need to try any of the recommended softwares. I used the Data LifeGuard Tools 11 provided by Western Digital and I am completely satisfied by the result. It produces identical drives and the best of it is it is FREEEE

Thank you for all of the contributions to the topic. Tweaknews is always my favorite forum in the world Very Happy

Let's hope you're right, but you may be a bit premature.

DLG sometimes "appears" to have cloned correctly but you later find out that one or more apps don't work 100%. This problem is well known, but it could be OK for you.

(A few years back I used DLG exclusively for cloning on a Win2K machine. When I got new computers, DLG wouldn't work on any of them. I went round and round with WD tech support + Kroll Ontrack, maker of DLG, and the final resolution was to "get a more robust cloning program".)

Thank you for letting me know you had some problems with DLG. I just cliked on some progs and everything was working. I should check all Confused
