I had used an earlier version of Spire with an oddball 70mm fan, and without the heatpipes, on an Intel socket 478 3.2Ghz. My results were similar to yours. I expected better results with the all copper design, versus the stock Intel copper core/aluminum fins CPU heatsink, but it was just slightly better than the Intel Stock CPU heatsink. I am sure a bigger fan on the Spire would have helped it..

Yeah, it's not very impressive, but pretty cheap. There will be an upcoming review on Spire's "VertiCool II". It fares a bit better.
