The bs stops. Now the intelligent conversations return. Much respect nathan , it was getting a little old.

Good review, I have the mx510 and i am a avid ( tho not very talented ) gamer. So you think this would be a nice upgrade for a x-mas gift or would i notice much difference than my mx-510

This will be a viable upgrade though if you are having no problems now, you might want to invest the money elsewhere.

yeah i would just stick with the mx510, if its not causing you any problems, the only real difference with the G5 is, the higher dpi (which i dont even use, i use max like 1200dpi), and its a bit heavier. compared to my intellimouse 4, this thing is a brick.

Fuss, if you get one, let us know what you think :)

Im going to deviate for one slight second because this is 100% necessary...

ROFL PWNED!

FTR just dug the all mightiest of holes around one mouse....and FnF...well, i was about to post the same thing whilst i was using my pr0 1337 MXCordless1000 (which i must say is the best mouse ever made!) as i suddenly realised...shock shock horror horror...its cordless :O

Ive been tempted to skitz out on his ass like Nathan just did, but i felt i would leave it to him to do first, and damn he did a better job than i could of dreamed of.

I dont think we will miss too much, but my final words on this:

"The Tagan 480W is their Flagship PSU, i have used multiple other PSU's for at least 5 Minutes and can easily say its the biggest and best PSU on the market, nothing else should be looked at"

kthxbye

PostPosted: Wed Nov 02, 2005 11:45 am    Post subject: Thumb Button(s) Reply with quote

Very helpful review, especially for those of us who are salivating over the G7. I still dont agree with the decision to have only 1 thumb (side) button. I havent used that many mice, but with an mx700 and now an mx1000 I have grown quite fond of the 2 button setup. A couple of reasons why I think Logitech should have kept 2 thumb buttons:

1. In atleast a few games (Day of Defeat as an example), there is a primary and a secondary weapon (ex. Rifle and Pistol). I have used these buttons to quickly switch between my primary and secondary weapons (In Day of defeat the reload on a primary is often very slow and it is much faster to switch to the pistol if the first shot is missed).

Yes there are countless ways to switch weapons but I found this nice because the speed I could select the weapon (with my thumb), pull it out and shoot (with my index finger) is very fast.

2. My game machine doubles as my "everything else" machine. I like having a forward and back button for web browsing, and have incorporated that into the way I surf. Sure, the forward button is used a lot less than the back button, but again I prefer to have it.

3. I believe that the 2 buttons could be easily bound. I think that the biggest argument against 2 buttons is that they can be confused in a fire fight. I can understand this, but with the amount of software Logitech is making us load just to use the mouse it seems like they could easily bind the 2 thumb keys to do 1 action if desired. I won't vouch that the functionality exists in the software now (I dont have a G5), but it seems like it would be trivial to implement with what is already in there.

I will miss the 2 buttons greatly and they may be the one reason I don't purchase a G5/G7 mouse. While unlikely I hope that Logitech will realease another version of the G5/G7 with 2 thumb buttons (and maybe a few other changes too...)

If you had to ask me, I'd say the side-button issue would be more dependent on the size of your hands. I would (and frequently do) have problems using both side buttons in games, simply because my paws are so big. My thumb doesn't rest where I can comfortably reach both buttons, I have to "inch" my hand forward to hit the far button. I constantly miss, if I do use it...........which I can't now, due to various studio software upgrades, that also use mouse mapping programs. I would imagine people with smaller hands wouldn't have the issue.

I agree, I do like the two buttons for back/forward surfing (and those work without MouseWare, oddly enough), so I'll probably stick with a non-gamer mouse that has both.

On the other hand, literally, I wish Logitech would make an MX series left-handed mouse. I don't have alot of problems, but I'm pretty ambidextrous anyway.......but I'm definitely more comfortable using a lefty mouse.

I would just like to reference this comment in his SteelSound 5H post:

I have heard bad things from the 5h's, personally the only thing that stands them out from most headsets is the mic being able to retract into the mic. I have the Sennheiser PC155's and they are great with everything, i may pic up some Icemast Sibera black because they look really cool and they sound really good too a little better with mp3's than my PC155's but not better in games.

Specifically the bolded part, now I will reference his idiocy from this post:

im about to get paid to play games so i need the absolute best hardware possible so that way the hardware does not interfeir with my gaming, i use the MX518 the Icemate Siberias and the Steelpad QcK+,

You'll notice very contradicting statements about his precious Siberias as within a month they have gone from "not good for gaming" to "best possible hardware for being a professional gamer"

HAHAHAH PWND AGAIN :)

Oh snap, I just got this mouse as an early bday present, and I must say I am lovin it! It didn't require me to install anything to use it...I just plugged it in and voila, and I can use the quickchange buttons (or w/e they are called) too. I still have to restart my computer because I just finished installing the software... but, this is definately a step up from my one penny optical mouse

My brother has the mx1000, and i think i like this one (g5) better because the customizable weights are a really nice touch, and can suit mostly anyone.

For anyone interested, there is a firmware update, that lets the g5 track on surfaces such as icemats. I have tested it on mine and it seems to work great. (after i bought a steelpad qck+)

you can download it here:

Hi sorry to up this thread, just ordered parts to build a new pc now just to find the right mouse spent almost £2000 on the PC dont want the mouse or mouse mat to be the thing letting me down. i was intrested in getting the G5 but was wondering what would be the best mouse mat to get with it i know from past experience it can make so much diffrent specially in games like UT2004 which needs alot of accuracy when using lighting gun or trying to do the shock combo while moving around.

any help would be useful
thanks.

Im trying to weigh up the pros and cons between getting the G5 and the MX518. Could someone perhaps offer me some advice on which of these would be the better purchase please. I've never really thought about the weight of the mouse so im unsure how important this is for me.
Is the mx518 a nice weight? Such a hard decision
