|
|
The santa have whispered in my ear that I will get stinkin' rich!
So I need to decide on a processor for my new gaming rig.
AMD it will be! so I have some alternatives.
- Opteron 170 (the 175 isen't sold over here yet, but will probably be soon)
- X2 4800+
- FX-60
The Opteron is the cheapest ofcourse, but since I am stinking rich I dont care about price.
Earlier it has been so that dual processors did not give the same performance in games as teh single ones. IS that still the case? Won't games that come take full use of the dual processors?
Any input? |

I would say go with the X2. It will run current games fine and be able to handle anything in the future for a couple years. _________________ P4 3.2ghz

I have no problems with the Optie, it will last in the long run against the x2 since itsmade for server environments but the x2 clock speed can be attained with the opteron as well, so no performance loss at all. _________________ Remember When Sex was safer than racing???

Well, if money is not an issue, the FX-60 would be my choice. It's dual-core as well. As far as games using both cores, it's a tough call. Some do now, with some patching or game code mods, but very few games really even take advantage of Hyperthreading on Intel chips, and that's been around for quite some time. I would say that yes, in a couple of years, the "holy grail" games (Doom 4, HL3, maybe) will utilize dual core procs, but the majority won't, right out of the box. It'll take a reworking of the game engine at a deep level of the code, so the chances of it becoming mainstream before the next gen of engines come out is slim. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

actually FnF alot of the current popular games are optimizing for dual-core cpus. But not all of them are doing this. This optimization for dual-core is also giving the Intel hyper-threading cpus a boost, in some cases about 18% rise in fps.
If you want a cpu RIGHT NOW, and money is no problem go with the FX-60. But to give you an idea of what I would build if money was no object and was building a major power system. I would go with two opteron 280's on a motherboard that would support SLI. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

I know that, but define "popular".
What I mean is yeah, Doom 3 and HL2 have patches available to optimize for dual-core, but it's not a native game engine code. Maybe the new Unreal code is, I'm not sure. True native dual-core (and 64 bit support) won't be a full reality for a little while yet. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

I would go with the Opteron170.
Mine is doing 2800 - which is FX60 speed + 200 Mhz, for less than half the price :)
If you get a good stepping you can even take it to 2900-3000 on air!!!
Why spend more money than neccessary? _________________ Opteron170 @ 2.8 Ghz - NexXxoS XP AMD64, NexXxoS NVXP-3, NexXxoS NB-SLI1 Northbridge

Thanks guys, I think it'll be an X2.
But the dual Opteron 280's are tempting!. Any recomindaitons, and links to rewievs for dual 939 processor motherboards?
Oh and the rich thing...
I simply told somebody how stupid they where, and they gave me bundles of cash. Sometimes ignorance is a good thing.... for me that is |

so ur a consulter r u? i use a dfi lanparty nf4 sli-dr, prolly the best 939 mobo out there is the a8n-32sli from asus, very good, but freind, u may want to wait for the summer, and amd's release of socket AM2, it will support up to DDR2-1.100ghz memory speed, thats effing fast, so u may wanna wait..lol _________________ My setupd:

or if you are going to wait a while then the new Intel chips are going to be the way to go. They are smoking fast! _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

LOL, my first rig was an 8mhz XT (8086) with an NEC 8087 math coprocessor, 10MB hard disk, 360kb floppy and a black and green screen (green text). I was about 10 at the time (bare in mind, technology was a bit behind where I lived then )
Thats not counting the TV computers I had before that
So, what happened with this gaming rig? _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock
