hey guys, i have recently acquired a large sum of files wich i would like to make available on my own server, the problem? i dont know how .lol,
i have a machine that can be on 24/7 and has internet access, i also havew windows XP pro, and windows server 2003, which one is better?

now i think it would be more like an FTP server, but i want to be able to Stream video and music off of it, is it possible?
the part i dont understand, is how i go from, "ok my files are on the HDD" to "im in timbuktu and want to access my server", ?? help anyone?
i guess u need like a basic walk through

This is do-able, but it may be tricky. The first thing you need to do is set up an FTP server (try getting a free version from cnet or download.com. Set the server up, share what you wish, make accounts, . . . etc. If you have a router, you'll have to open up a port (usually 21 for ftp's) and forward that to your FTP server computer. You will also need to determine your IP address. This will allow you to access that computer.

Depending on your internet connection, streaming video could be quite difficult.
What is your connection type?

Google would be very useful in the details of setting up an FTP.

Alot of that is going to depend on your ISP as well. Most home ISP providers either have ports blocked, to prevent running a server, or deny connection completely by making your IP "invisible" behind a proxy at their end.

I know there is a program "of coarse I forgot the name" that automatically updates your IP (since Home ISP's usually dont come with static IP), and also allows you to use any port you so choose to avoid possible blockage on the ISP's end. I will see if I can get it going but I am a little busy so Dont expect a quick reply.

Basically, yes. You want and FTP Server program, not a client. ServU or some such. There's some free ones available, like FileZilla, that aren't half bad. What you do to set it up is dependent on the software you use.

You should also be able to play any media file right off the FTP, but like JD said, that's really dependent on your upstream bandwidth. If you want to just stream media, you can use Slim Device's SlimServer software (free) from http://www.slimdevices.com/pi_features.html

as was mentioned above, you need an ftp server to access files, this will not let you stream music however, just access files.
if you have a dynamic ip, it's recommended to get an ip redirector. this will set the ip to a name example meobius.serveftp.com points to the ip address of one of my servers. both those names direct whoever types them to my servers current ip address.
Try taking a look at faststream netfile. That software is a limited freeware (more than enough for home user) includes an html server, ftp server as well as an auto updater to two redirecters.

as far as OS, either will probably do what you want, windows xp is easier to setup in my opinion. win2k3 probably has better security though. For whay you're doing, i'ld say go with XP.
