Verrrrry interesting.........

Last month, I finally upgraded my vid card, picked up a Sapphire X800GT 256mb AGP card. Yeah, it's an 8-pipe card, but that's double what my old card was..........

Anyway, I was doing some digging around, just curious as to what I could do with this card, and I found out something interesting. Sapphire used two different cores on the X800GT's, the R423 and the R480. Turns out I have the R480 core! For those that don't know, that's the core used on the X800XT with 16 pipes.

Some more digging, and I found out that the core is only BIOS locked. I SHOULD be able to unlock at least 4 more pipes, with a possibility of a full 16 pipes (X800XT bios flash, or even just using RivaTuner).

Might need better cooling, though, the HSF on the Sapphire isn't exactly beefy.......good, and it allows me to OC the card to 540mhz (up from 490) without breaking a sweat, so I might be ok here.........wish me luck!

Nah, it's easily reversible, if the BIOS flash doesn't work. If it were a hardware mod, I wouldn't even try *looks at shaky hands*

Just need to pick up a cheapie PCI vid card, so I can flash back to the stock BIOS if it doesn't work. Did a little more OC'ing last night, I can run the card with the stock BIOS at 565 core/565 memory with no problems at all. An X800PE (the BIOS I need to unlock the pipes) runs at 500/560 stock speeds.

TH has a 5500 or something he's gonna send, if he can find it. If he can't, I'll let ya know. All I need is something to run a DOS screen if I botch the BIOS flash.

eh, I'm not in a real huge rush, got enough going on this month to really take the time I need to tweak it properly. If you don't find it in a few weeks, I'll start looking around again.
