I am thinking about upgrading my system to something that has SSE2 support so I can run Adobe Premiere Elements and that will eventually run Windows VISTA. I have looked around the forum and haven't found quite what I'm looking for so if there is already a post about this please direct me there.

I want to upgrade my CPU and Motherboard. I am happy with everything else in the system (basically). I will have about $145 to spend but that may go up or down depending on how much I can sell my motherboard and processor for (I'm guessing around $100 or more total from looking at eBay).

My question is...What do you recommend? I would like to stick to AMD if possible. From what I've seen so far it looks like I want a Socket 939 motherboard but probably can't afford one. So is it worth it to get a Socket 747 motherboard and CPU? From what I've seen there seems to be problems with nForce3 and 747 is outdated. Any input into this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Would this work?

AMD Athlon 64 2800+ ClawHammer 800MHz FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Processor - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103485

Gigabyte GA-K8NS Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813128259

I can't find any motherboards that have firewire. Is something that isn't standard anymore?

$170 would be enough to get a 939 CPU thats decent, and a motherboard that can support it you CAN find cheap, but I like to stick to the "You get what you Pay for" rule. Not that the cheap boards wont work, just that if your planning on overclocking or anything, I wouldnt recommend the cheap boards.

You are basically asking for two different systems. The one to run Vista on and one to fit in your budget and have SSE2. If you can live with out the SSE2 for a while long I say save up and build a whole new computer as you will need it to run Vista.

agreed... and I would wait for intel to dump netburst (coming soon) and get one of the new Pentium Ds. If not then I would recommend the X2 so you dont have to worry about upgrading for a long time.

Sounds good, I think I'll wait a while to upgrade, probably until SP1 of VISTA. Thanks for the advice!
